Among the members of the band, is there a feeling that there is some sort of 'problem' that has prevented or inhibits the band from getting more performances?

Have there been comments from impartial listeners that 'things need fixing'?

I certainly understand the desire to have good players in the band, but sometimes 'ya gotta do with what ya got'.

KNOW (see) what the next note is BEFORE you have to play it.
PLAY the next note 'on time' and 'in rhythm'.
Oh ya, watch the conductor - they set what is 'on time'.

The band did a survey recently about good and bad things perceived by members. The number one complaint was trumpets are too loud in practice and at gigs. The whole band said that, and it has come up during practice too.
Our lead guy is the reason. Too loud.

So our last gig he finally backed off. And he backed off to the point where trumpets blended into the background. People in the audience who attend all of our gigs also mentioned that for once, the trumpets blended.

But, and this is a big but, they blended to the point of being missing. I expect the trumpets still to be there, lightly shimmering above the band. That is my preference in sound. I expect to hear everyone. I could except for the trumpets.

The other issue is his solos. He doesn't push then. So again, he can't be heard.

This is what started this whole thread. The set up in equipment for him is a tone lacking in high overtones unless he really pushes. I want him to have a brighter tone quality so that even when dynamics are lower, he is still present in the mix.

Give a listen to the late, great Carl Saunders' comments about lead players in this YouTube interview. His experience and wisdom on the matter is quite insightful. This is a long interview, but his specific thoughts about lead players begins at the 21:00 minute mark and runs until 25:00. His words ring so true.

Maybe, rather than trying to 'fix' his sound go to a more Harry James kinda sound concept. The 1C would do just fine for that.
