Wick 4B & 4BW Cornet Mouthpiece Question

Current my setup is a Wick 4B on a Getzen Custom 3850 cornet. The rim is narrow with a really sharp edge like a Bach, but the sound is really fine. I'm looking to get a wider rim with a more rounded bite. Does the 4BW also have the same sharp bite?

Also, does anyone know of an alternative cornet British band type mouthpiece in the .640/16.25 mm inner diameter that would met the above criteria?

The 4BW has the same basic rim shape - it's on the flat side with a squarish outside shoulder and likewise on the inside... I find it horrible for endurance and flexibility, but to each their own.

As to the second question...

Yes, I can give you a good recommendation in that sort of size, in fact I can give you a few:
1) Curry 8.5BBC - nice rounded profile, not too narrow and not too bitey.
2) GR Technologies - model 64 cornet #7.

The Curry is much cheaper and plays very similarly - I wouldn't bother spending the extra for the GR unless you play GR already and want to keep exactly the same rim.

I remember comparing the Curry and the GR years ago. I had both mouthpieces and found them quite different. The GR was, like the GR trumpet mouthpiece I had, really something special. Both were very easy to play with a great response. Why didn't I stay with the GRs? Something was missing in the sound. It was a lack of richness and depth that I found with the Wick mouthpieces.

The Curry BBC, oft touted here, but never did it work for me. It always felt, and still does feel, stuffy. Something just didn't work with the Curry. Odd, since I have may Curry mouthpieces and they all work really well. The BBC is the only one that didn't work for me. I also never found the sound anything special. It was not bright, not dark, not really much of anything, just middle of the road.

Another option is the Yamaha E series. Amazing sound and much easier to play that the Wicks. The question is will it work for your cornet. They are not expensive. I've got a bunch of them.

For me, both 4B Heritage and 4BW Heritage are much more comfortable and less tiring on lips than comparable non-W classic Denis Wick versions. Neither of these two has a sharp rim.
