Hi different makes/models seem to have 1, 2, or 3 water keys / klappen.

Im wondering why this is? Is it just cost? Can you do without all 3 or do they make a REAL difference (esp for a novice).

One of the keys is always generally there (the "water key" which nobody really uses for water). That affects the arpeggio Bb, D, F (above the staff).

From there, it just depends on your preference. For principal C trumpet work, having the key that affects A/C# and the key that affects C are very useful (which means you end up with all 3).

For a novice, it really isn't that big of a deal if you don't plan on doing it at a very high level. But at least 2 are nice and if I had to chose I'd probably go with the "high C" key as it has the most obvious effect, for me. Given that you're in the UK, and likely playing Bb, just the one key is more than sufficient for Bb trumpets.

Edit: Adding that I have 3 keys on my Schagerl C and only the 1 on my Schagerl Bb

They also require practice and add some weight but I am no authority because my rotary does not have any additional keys other than the long water key.

Just remembered: besides the D, A, C, there is also the H-Klappe, for those looking for an additional challenge

H is B natural in German.
