Lou really did not define exactly what it was that turned him off on the FeatherTouch valves. (telephone conversation ... we never met in-person).

He more-or-less made a vocalized, "Ugh", without elaborating, and seemed anxious to move on.

Well, there’s no accounting for taste. Though I’m sure he had his reasons, and based on a wealth of experience for sure.

My comment about the Roller Bearing being impractical was two fold. First, they were, at the time, costly to make. I'm sure that is the primary reason why they were abandoned. Second, they were prone to malfunction if not kept clean. That tiny roller ball could easily get clogged up with all the gunk that collects in a valve section. Back in my playing days i used a few different Super Deluxes a lot without any problems. But horn maintenance was a pretty big deal in our house. Based on what I have seen, not every player is as diligent... especially younger players.

I loved the Roller Bearings, but I can't imagine doing it today. Based on how many comments I have heard about the hassle of maintaining Amado waterkeys over the years, I can't imagine the complaints of having to keep the bearings clean and oiled.
