Been listening to alot of WV and love his sound. I know he's played different instrument over the years, and even has his own custom cornet. I've heard he played a Yamaha student model (ycr 231 or 233??), do you think i should buy one of those if i can find them cheap? I know WV will sound like himself on almost any cornet probably, but well some cornets might help a bit with getting that kind of sound
Thanks! |

I used to have a Yamaha student cornet that outplayed most of my other horns. It had a great sound, great response and very good intonation. Plus it was cheap. WV played his for years and everytime he comes up on a song on my Pandora station, he is instantly recognizable. _________________ Richard

Wow thats cool! Do you know the exact model you or WV used? Was it a student model like 231 or 2310? |

Ca. 1990, Warren Vache Jr. Was playing a Yamaha YCR233 in lacquer finish. I used to own one, and I loved it. I replaced it with a YCR2330S, which I love even more. The 233 and 2330 are shepards-crook models, and in most photos, he's playing a longer "American style" cornet. _________________ '75 Bach Strad 180ML/37

Warren is amazing. He could play a garden hose and make it sound musical. There's a fairly recent video where he plays trumpet. |

Interesting, so you dont think WV has played on the YCR231? The 231 is more of a long cornet style developed with Schilke i think (read that somewhere). Someone on previous forum posts thought WV had been playing YCR231.. |

No, that's not what I (don't) think. He was playing a YCR233 in about 1990. I made no statement about what other cornet(s) he was playing at that time or any other time. _________________ '75 Bach Strad 180ML/37

He plays a horn with a threaded-on bell. I actually saw him unscrew it and keep on playing at a gig a couple of years ago.
I just found a copy of his first record, reading the liner notes, I discovered we had the same teacher when we were kids. Much different outcome. |

The recordings I've heard of Warren Vache, give me the impression that there is no "Holy Grail" horn. Definitely some that would take you far from his sound, and many that would get you near it. The search for "just the right horn' can be fun but, at your stage, unnecessary if not discouraging.
To illustrate, when I was younger, I tried to sound like Miles Davis on a Connstellation. Got close through phrasing and tonal concept but no cigar. Then, when I was more experienced and sophisticated, I got a Committee and a Gustat mouthpiece. Guess what? I still didn't sound like Miles Davis.
Point being, don't go on a search for a "Holy Grail" horn. Have a clear picture in your Mind's Ear what Warren Vache sounds like and what you sound like and what you need to do to bring those two into alignment. "The body follows the mind".
And mouthpiece choice is important.
If I was you, I'd spend a lot of time playing along with Vache, matching his sound. Over time, you'd be surprised how close you can get. Good Luck. _________________ "If you don't live it, it won't come out of your horn." Bird

I find just listening a lot really works. After spending a bunch of time listening, I start to play and it comes out sounding about the same as what I just listened to. Not only that, but the same tune and improv approach comes out too. Weird. It last for a while before going away. There's a process where the brain latches onto the sound, the feel or something. _________________ Richard

I agree that listening a lot and imitating is the most important thing. Actually, i've listened to countless hours of his playing the last months and i've also transcribed/imitated him quite a bit already. But, i only have a trumpet, and i sound more like WV does when he plays trumpet which is alright, but there is a big difference (to me atleast) in his sound when playing trumpet and cornet, and i like his cornet playing much more, so i still think its necessary for me to get some type of cornet.. |
