If a life is a series of journeys, we know that they start, and they end. In 1981, I was privileged to start a new journey similar to one I undertook in Seattle, WA four years prior.
In the late summer of 2025, it will be time to end that journey, paving the way for others to follow. All good things come to an end, and my tenure as principal trumpeter of the Minnesota Orchestra has been a marvelous, wonderful journey for myself and my family.
Just think of all the great musicians I've been honored to meet, the friends I've made, the students I've taught, the places to which I have traveled. I am so fortunate; I feel as though a new word has to be invented to describe the depths of that good fortune.
After discussing it with my family, I have this evening told our music director and my brass-playing colleagues of my decision and I accepted their warm congratulations. Now, I come to you all with this news in the hopes that you might come to a concert or two as this season winds down and the 44th and final one in my chair begins.
I can promise you it will be a wild party. |

Thanks for putting the notice up, Alex. People have been genuinely sweet in their expressions of congratulations. I've been telling them, "I have one more year to get it right!"
Best wishes,
