Hi
I'm looking for advice on piccolo tpt (Cornet shank)
mouthpieces. I've tried a schilke 14 and now a VB 7E but not happy with the sound which constricts in the higher register. Strangely enough, I find my VB 1c gives me the sound I like but is this too big to work in the upper register?

TIA

The Schilke 11A and 11Ax are good pic pieces that would be between the 14 and Bach 7E sizes you've tried. I've also found the Yamaha 11C4, which has a little more cup volume than the 11A, good for piccolo work where I want a fuller/warmer sound.

I personally would struggle with endurance on a 1C but I think I recall from the interviews in Hickman's "Piccolo Trumpet Big Book" that a few of the players he talked to did use pieces in that size so no reason it couldn't work if you can play efficiently on a 1C.

Hello all,
I played the Schilke 11AX for the longest time. Ordered an 11BX just to get a warmer sound. I have also used Warburton 5SV, 6S and 6SV cups with some degree of success. The SV cups seem to work with soprano Eb also with a 13B.

I think I have too much lip intrusion to get along with most dedicated picc pieces. Best I've found so far is a Yamaha 11B4 long shank. It definitely sounds better for me than the A-cups I struggle with.

I've played Reeves 41 rims for a very long time and I really like my Reeves 41SV Gold Plate Cornet shank for brighter, higher playing, but a rare departure from my otherwise Reeves selection is a Schilke 11AX Gold Plate cornet shank that I am playing more often lately. I have more color control with the Schilke plus lots of endurance compared to the Reeves. Adapting to the somewhat different feel was relatively easy and switching back and forth is seamless, at least in my experience.

Thanks for the insight! I will certainly give the 11BX a shot! That and the Red Brass bell on my picc may be a great combo for a darker sound!

Life is Short, find the Joy in it!

I just got an Austin Custom Brass 1.25 Studio with a long shank C1 Backbore. I am amazed at how much better it is on Piccolo than anything I have had before. Still in honeymoon phase, so take it for what it is. Recommended by Josh at ACB. I am playing a Kanstul 920.
