I totally agree. Get "Clifford Brown With Strings" any Miles Davis on the Prestige label. Chet Baker, Pacific jazz recordings. "My Funny Valentine" is one of my favorites. Also get "The Last Great Concert Vols 1 and 2 It has some great orchestrations and Chet sounds awesome. I also like "Misty", "What's New", "Yesterdays" and "Body and Soul." There is a lot of great stuff there to listen to. Also check out "The Gentle Side of John Coltrane" or any ballads with Johnny Hartman. It's nice to listen to other instruments than a trumpet sometimes. Happy listening!

DSR,
I'm assuming by the ballads you named, you're not just necessarily looking for "Trumpet-Featured" ballads? If this is the case and I'm certain that given the type of Forum we're in, I know you'll get more than your share of related ballads from the folks here. That said, I will deviate from the "Trumpet Stuff". I have a TON of favorites so I'll just address some recent stuff I've been listening to ...
Michel Camilo & Tomatito "Besame Mucho" and another (title escapes me right now)
Dave Weckl Band from "Synergy"..."A Simple Prayer"
Gino Vanelli from "Pauper in Paradise..."Black and Blue (London Symphony will definately tug at you)
Mike Stern from "Odds and Even"...Here's another title that escapes me. You know how it is when you're just listening to to tracks and forget the names!
Anyway, there are more and certainly much older ones but you perked me when you brought up Pat! |

Get any CD on Verve by tenor saxophonist Ben Webster. You can't go wrong listening to Webster for ballads and phrasing. |

One of my favorite Ballads is on the CD, "Unforgettably Doc." I truly love this album. It shows off a side of Doc that a lot of people havn't seen before. He is truly a master of ballads. I also love Bobby Shew's "Metropole Orchestra" CD. It is also worth checking out. _________________ '70 Selmer Radial

Johnny Mathis, "Open Fire, Two Guitars."
This is one of the most beautiful recordings I've ever heard . . . .
First time I listened to it I had tears streaming down my face after a couple minutes, and for about a half-hour more after it was over. Unbelievably beautiful album.
Don't forget Charlie Parker's "April In Paris" album . . . with strings. Also gorgeous.
Another wonderful album (not necessarily all ballads, though) is the Paul Desmond & Gerry Mulligan album, "Two of a Mind."
The first tune (title tune) on Grant Green's "Idle Moments" is about a 17 minute ballad . . . wait? Where are all the trumpet ballad albums?
Check out some Harry James ballads . . . I was recently turned onto Harry James by the lead trumpet player on the Tommy Dorsey band (Mike Wyatt), and am amazed that I've overlooked him all these years. I downloaded a bunch of Harry James on AudioGalaxy recently, and am currently in awe of that guy's ability and versatility!!!
There's my 2¢ worth for you. Take care!
