Last week I split my lip (not from trumpet playing, from having dry lips, but the trumpet playing didn’t make it better) and there was a fair amount of blood so I took a break from playing until it healed. I was pretty certain it had healed, until yesterday when it cracked along the same spot and bled again. This is really not ideal and I’m concerned because I don’t know how to fix it. I really don’t want it to become a bigger issue because trumpet playing means the world to me. Does anyone have any advice on how to help it heal quicker (and stay healed)?

You must maintain moisture. Dermatologists/doctors suggest sealing with vaseline. My rule is healing for 2 weeks for anything mouth related.

Good luck!

I use a 'chap-stick' type grease on my lips before going to sleep. It seems to help keep lip tissue in good condition.

KNOW (see) what the next note is BEFORE you have to play it.
PLAY the next note 'on time' and 'in rhythm'.
Oh ya, watch the conductor - they set what is 'on time'.

Thanks for the tips, I'll find some lip balm and try to take a break from playing until it properly heals. I'm just worried about losing chops, as playing is a big part of my life right now and I have to do a lot of it currently for school.

I had cracked lips when I visited countries with temperature climates (I’m from the tropics). One time, I had to play the trumpet a few days after I got back home. With a cracked lip and no lip balm, I was getting desperate for solutions. I remembered I had access to a lot of individually-packed facial masks (I’m referring to the beauty ones and not the ones used during Covid-19). I chose the masks that had words like “hydrating”, “moisturizing” and the likes of it, and applied it on my face. When applied on my face, I moved the mask to cover my lips and made sure that it absorbed all the moisture possible. When I finally went for rehearsal, I was shocked at how great my lips felt! Since then, it has always been a routine for me to apply face mask on the night before a rehearsal day!

I’m also aware that some people may have allergic reactions to particular ingredients in facial masks so please read carefully before trying. If your lips are pretty badly cracked, the moisture from the masks will sting! So you should only try this when you’re at the tail end of recovery!

Hope you find the solution that you will work for you! All the best!

Not trying to be argumentative, and I appreciate that all of the advice here is well-intended. But I wouldn't recommend using hydrogen peroxide on your lip.

Giving general medical advice, using hydrogen peroxide regularly on an open wound will delay healing and increase the chance for permanent scaring. Instead, follow normal hygiene with simple soap and water. You can use plain Vaseline to protect the wound. And if you're concerned about anything other than simple chapped lips, go see your doctor.

I use Monster oil Magic Lip Goo for dry or worked lips at th end of the day,

but yeah, rest and see a doctor for a cracked lip if it persists.

Yeah I think hydrogen peroxide is a bad idea. Definitely hurts!
