I had Schilke convert my B1 to a B1L tuning bell and I must say there is a difference in the way the horn feels. It vibrates more in the hand and has alot more overtones to it. The upper register seems to play brighter than before. I only played on it tonight for about 20 minutes but I have 2 gigs this weekend. I'll put it to the test this weekend. The Schilke factory did a fantastic job on my horn. My horn was in very good condition before the conversion but now it is brand new. They replated the whole horn and if I hadn't checked the serial number I would have thought they sent me a new B1L and kept mine. Turn around time was a little over 4 weeks. If anybody is thinking of doing the conversion DO IT!!!!! You won't be sorry. It cost me $355.00 with return shipping. I think it cost me about 18.00 to send it to them. Well worth the money. Check with Schilke on the price of the conversion. Mine was one of the first that they did since the changeover and they said they underestimated the job just a bit. It's gonna be a good weekend!!!!! _________________ Schilke B1L / GRe65M/e65S

bdev,
Congratulations on the horn. I have a B1L and it is a awesome horn. I think the more you play it and adapt to it you will realize just how special it really is. Keep us posted on how it's going after you've played it for a while. |

Before and after pics would do no good. My horn looked like a new B1 now it looks like a new B1L. I've attached a link to the Schilke website if you want to see the difference between both horns.

Give us some more comments now that you have had more time to get settled in with the horn. |

BrassClass....here's a follow up.
I really can't describe in technical terms how different the horn plays. I just feels and plays better. Call it better response or whathaveyou but it's just a great playing horn. I think the combination of removing the braces and not having to pull the tuning slide out to tune up makes all the difference. Even my bandmembers noticed a difference in the tone. I'm curious....has anybody converted..... lets say..... a Bach or Olds or other brand to a tuneing bell? If so was there a big difference? _________________ Schilke B1L / GRe65M/e65S

bdev,
Did you notice any difference in the actual blow of the horn meaning...is the tuning bell option tighter blowing, more open, etc. The reason I'm asking is that I have a B1L out on trial right now. I love the sound and response of the horn but the blow seems much tighter when using the "tuning-bell method as opposed to when using the conventional tuning slide. I find if my chops are TOTALLY centered and I'm blowing THROUGH the horn the tuning bell system is great. But, as soon as I deviate from this, maybe overblow alittle, the horn backs right up in my face...especially the extreme upper register (D-A). I haven't played a tuning bell Schilke since the mid '70's so maybe it's just the way I'm approaching it. Any comments (from anyone) would be appreciated!
Thanks,
