Good morning, all. I am shopping for a good C trumpet. I will be doing mostly chamber and orchestral playing. I have looked in to several models. I'd like to try a Bach 229/25H. I am also going to try a couple of Stomvi models. I have a contact to try the Stomvi horns, but where can I try others? I am in the Dallas, TX area.

You can try horns from Dillon Music in Woodbridge, NJ. They will give you a week or so to play the horn, then you ship it back to them. Shipping costs between $15-20 to send it back. Check out their policy at http://www.dillonmusic.com. They have a nice selection and are great to work with. Good Luck.

You might want to consider a Flip Oakes C trumpet. I just sold my Bach 239/25R (GH) because the intonation and sound quality was very unsatisfactory for me. I replaced it with an Oakes C and have been getting rave reviews from my peers. Don't know what kind of money you have to invest, but just wanted to drop in my two cents-worth. Happy horn hunting!
Regards,

Brook Mays has a broad selection of Bach Cs (229/239/sterling, etc). Talk to Roger Holmes at the LBJ store for someone that knows how to help you. 972-233-9633 Tell Rog that I sent you.

Thanks for all the info. How much does a Flip Oakes C run? Is it more than the Stomvi lines? |

The Flip Oakes C lists for $2700 in Silverplate. In general, these small production horns are not deeply discounted like. for example, Bach's. Often they are not discounted at all. Tom Turner is a dealer for them, I believe, and may have more accurate or up-to-date information.
A Bach C (again in silver) is probably in the $1500-1600 ballpark. Stomvi Elite is maybe $100 more, and if they have a C Master, it's a few hundred on top of that.
Cheers,
Tom |

Have you thought about attending the ITG Conference?
Not only will Bach, Yamaha, Stomvi etc be there with their instruments, but you will get the chance to try out Wild Things, Eclipse, Smith-Watkins, Besson, adapted instruments - the lot. Worth thinking about.
If youhave played a Bach and like the feel, have you considered a Xeno? Many people now seem to be using these, especially those that have been tamppered with by some of the better repairers. My local repairman (no use to you whatsoever) has adapted his Xeno to take a Bach leadpipe and it is just fantastic. For those of you attending ITG - look out for Will Spencer, he will be there somewhere, with golden trumpets. |

The Bach is always a good choice if that is the SOUND you are going for. When I went shopping for a C trumpet I tried a lot of horns. I was finally down to a Bach 25H/229 vs. a Yamaha Xeno. Both horns played very well, and intonation was pretty good for a C trumpet but the Bach won hands down for the sound. I could manipulate the sound easier and it had all of the colors that I was in search of. The 25A/229 and 25C/239 were just behind that for how I play. A small mouthpiece change can help some of the intonation problems by creating a better trumpet/mouthpiece balance. I found with a 24 Bach backbore or Schilke D backbore with a 26 or 24 throat can really help the sound, and makes the C, D, Eb and E in the staff easier to play in the center and in tune. That us my 2 cents. It doesen't matter what you end up with if it is what you like. WWBW usually has a lot in stock. Also try Tulsa Band instruments. I got a killer price on my Kanstul Flugel. Prowinds in bloomington had a great price for my C. just look around on the net. Good luck!

Well, I throw my 2 cents in for ZeuS.
Entirely hand crafted in the USA by one of the leading manufacturers,
Various custom finishes, Single piece, hand hammered, 4 7/8 inch, yellow brass, #37-style bell,
Standard weight construction, #25 style leadpipe,.462" bore,
Hand fitted Monel valves, Genuine pearl finger buttons, Traditional brass valve guides (not plastic)
Traditional lever-type waterkeys, ZeuS 5C professional mouthpiece,
ProTec contoured trumpet case with zipper and shoulder strap
http://www.ibowtie.com/storetrumpets.html
Those are the specs. The Guarnerius C trumpet is modeled after a Mt. Vernon Bach. Prices new start at $950 and for a beautiful custom finish they max out a $1150. If you do not have a ZeuS dealer near you (there are two dealers in Texas see http://www.zacharymusic.com/Zachary_Music/Dealers.htm ), you can use the trial policy. If not impressed as many have been with the openness and intonation, it only costs you the shipping.
