What recordings would you reccomend of the Artunian concerto? _________________ Don't practice until you get it right, practice until you can't get it wrong.

I like Dokshizer's recording. Also, I'm not sure if vince dimartino has recorded it, but I heard him play a bit of it at a masterclass he did here and he sounded amazing on it.

Avoid Arturo's. Stylistically, it's awful.

My personal favorite Arutunian recording is by Jouko Harjanne. He's a student of Dokshitzer - so he has some of the Russian character in his interpretation (only seems appropriate, hmm). I also have the Dokshitzer recording - but I like Jouko's because his sound is a little less (strident? bright? Russian?) and easier to listen to. It's difficult to find on this side of the Atlantic, however...

I think that it is interesting considering how well known the piece is in the trumpet word, that there aren't more recordings of it available. Is there any particular reason for this.
It isn't like the F.J. Hayden Concerto where you can take your pick of Schwartz, Marsalis or Andre and those are just the ones that I own. I don't own a recording of the Arutunian but I wish I did. I'll have to make an effor to get my hands on the Dokshitzer recording. _________________ Patrick Gleason

What about Maurice Murphy's. I have many recordings but I always come back to this one for reference when I have to perform it. I can't quite play it as well as Mr. Murphy, however!!!

I can't recall the name of the disc, but it has the Haydn, Hummell, Arutunian, and then it has the Prince of Denmark's March, and the Stanley Trumpet Tune. Great disc. I'll check the name when I get home and I will post it for you. I have had the disc for many years now so it may have been discontinued.

Hi Brian.
The disc is called Favourite Trumpet Concertos and it's on th Collins Classics label. It's Maurice Murphy with the Consort of London. It's about 12 years old now.

Hi Brian. Actually, I've lost the cover to mine so I can't tell you what it looks like. Everything on the disc is great. What else would you expect!?
Let me know if you find a copy.

William Foreman offers an amazingly clean and un-gypsyesque rendition of the Arutunian. It is refreshingly advanced.
