We have heard that Priscilla King and Rich Willy, both self-described comeback players, make their living from the trumpet nowadays. I'd like to know who else does. Are there any famous names in the trumpet world who could be described as a comeback player? _________________

Bud Brisbois quit playing and then came back shortly before his death. In the distant past, even before my time, there was a cornet player named Red Nichols, who quit and came back. He led a group called Red Nichols and the Five Pennies, as I recall. I don't know if this counts, but Rafael Mendez effectually quit, when he suffered a severe lip injury, but came back. I'll probably think of some others later. _________________ S. T.

Hey,
Lee Morgan left the scene so completely that the story goes, he heard a memorial show on the radio that spurred him to comeback. _________________ The most important factor in developing the high register is desire, the patience to wait, and the necessary time to acquire it.

Well into his career, Terrence Blanchard spent a long time away from playing to change his embouchure. While it's not technically quiting, I think it counts as making a comeback... |

The story goes that they got Bunk Johnson off a farm to go into the recording studio, but I don't know if that's true or exaggerated....

Vincent Penzarella came back from significant injury. Also Louis Armstrong.
There's a CD about Rafael Mendez that has him talking about coming back from injury. Pretty inspiring. |

I'd be willing to be that most players are comeback players, to one extent or another. _________________ Jim Hatfield
