I have a dilemma. Keep in mind that Money is kind of tight for me right now so..well here we go.
I play keys (professionally) 90% of the time and I am just trying to be a comeback player on trumpet. I don't play much legitimate music...mostly jazz standards...older pop ..and classic rock.
Here's my question for you guys.

Would it be better for me to own a mid 70's Getzen Severinsen in very good condition for about $400-$450.....or would it be better for me to keep my '92 Bach Stradivarius that I paid $730.00 for. The Strad plays nice but has quite a lot of worn silver plating and pitting. I haven't played the Severinsen yet...but I know that I have always liked Getzen horns.
What are my pros and cons.
Am I nuts? I am obsessing now.
Ya see, money for me is very tight for me right now ...and every little bit helps.

Yea you are probably nuts, after all you do play the trumpet.
The Severinsen will probably play a lot easier than the Bach. By the way which Bach is it (37, 72, 43, *)? The light weight Bachs will probably play a little easier than the standard ones but the Severinsen will play easier than any Bach..... remember this is a gross generalization. You should not buy the Getzen without playing it first because like all horns there were some good ones made and some dogs too. My first new pro horn was a '72 Severinsen and it was just a magic horn but I played a few so so horns before I found it. Overall the Getzen should be a little brighter, easier to blow, easier to handle, just easier all around to play but if money is an issue and you don't sell the Strad to pay for the Getzen what is all this extra fun worth. Happy decision making. Mark

My Strad is a 25 leadpipe and a 37 standard weight bell.

I forgot to mention...I will not be able to own BOTH horns....

How do your 2 Olds horns play? You have an Ambassador and a Special, both good horns! Seems to me you already have all the horns you need?

Remember, you can always take it in and have replating done if cosmetics of the trumpet bother you.

I am not as thrilled on the OLDS horns as I used to be . I had just sold my '53 Olds Recording recently....to favor my Bach Strad.

Now I just bought a Getzen Severinsen because it might play more open than my Bach.
I dunno....I'm just another picky and fickle trumpet player who is looking for the PERFECT horn....(which probably doesn't exist).

At the price you won it at ... that is a small amount to pay for a nice playing horn. Congrats! Please keep us posted on the horn's performance and if it will require you to sell your others.

Okay, now that we have established that you are crazy (a trumpet player), it is understood that you are after the perfect horn. Well, if the Getzen plays anything like my first one did you will want to sell the Strad and the Olds and whatever you have that isn't as good. The Getzen should play better than them all but there is one thing the core of sound will not be the same as on your Bach. You will need to do some listening to see if the ease of playing is an acceptable trade off or perhaps you will like the sound better as well, after all the Getzen is more like a race car. But for the perfect horn you have to know what type of playing you will be using it for. I have an R37 for the dark and smooth stuff, a Renaissance for the brighter stuff and a few new Calicchios (R1S2, Trigg) which I will probably start me selling off my other Bb horns. Have fun, Mark

You're right I am C-uhraeeeee-"Cuh-razee for fee--ling so lonleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee....

Actually, what you said about the trade off makes a lot of sense.

I will do a comparison soon and let the world know.

Meanwhile.....I am off to look at a baby grand piano. Go figure.

I never understood how you could have a baby grand?!??
And no I don't think the answer is Schilke, Schilke, Schilke. I think it may be psychiatrist, psychiatrist, psychiatrist.
Perhaps we could have our trumpet addictions declaired a mental illness so our medicine, new trumpets to keep us happy, could be a tax deduction. Mark

I don't think that we are any different from car ,boat, motorcycle enthusiasts..or anyone with a passion for their hobby or art.

Let's face it.....to own a beautiful finely crafted piece of work such as a trumpet...very masculine in it's form but oh so beautifully aesthetic in it's nature...is rewarding and also a healthy diversion to offset the pains and miseries or our challenging life obligations and habits.

Now lemme get BACH to work.
