Bulus has got to be the world's finest photographer of trumpets. Lighting is even, no hot spots or shadows, interesting backgrounds but not to the detraction of the photo's subject - the Trumpet!

Paul, if you'd share some of your secrets ...

No secrets I just happened to work with a great still life guy in NY and have done a lot of studying and shooting.........here's some shots of how I get a shot:

Understand the way the surface you are shooting responds to light.

Not exactly a casual setup, but understandable given the difficulty of the subject.

P King of PiCK Music does a great job with more casual equipment. She tells me that she did a lot of experimenting, but the results are nice. For an example see:

This is a great topic. Many of us would like good pictures of our own horns. Also, it's really frustrating to go over to Ebay as see a great horn for sale with crummy pics. A friend recently had trouble auctioning his V1 and I'm certain that it was partly due to his pics. The horn was mint, but his pictures weren't inviting.

Anybody got some other picture setups that really work for trumpets and other horns?

Dave

Paul (bulos) has no secret... just spend 20-30 years acquiring the right equipment, learn to use it correctly, and add a good dose of inate talent. Kinda becoming a musician. On the cheap, we all could probably get up to the 70-90% of the wway towards Paul's photos, but oh that last ten percent!
