About two years ago, at the insistence of a Bachophile friend, I play tested three "Limited Edition", .459 bore, 6 pipe, 6 bell Strads. Two of them had "issues". One of them had/has a great blow and a fine sound. I bought it. I'm not a Bach fan. Zig Kanstul, Smith-Watkins and Roy Lawler build my horns. My question is: the serial number on the Strad in question is in it's entirety 0281. When did Elkhart begin a "new" numbering system for the Strads?

I remember something funny about the numbering of one of those special editions. Perhaps they are outside the normal serial number sequence. That would not be unusual if they are supposed to be limited editions.

The Bach "Anniversary" Strads from the 1980s also had their own serial number sequence, with a zero in front.

Bach chances serial number only on instrument that special editions and anniversary models are made. The serial number denote how many were in a selected edition. They still keep the date of for the special run. per Ken Hocker chief trumpet tester.

A friend of mine bought one of these Anniversary edition Strads a while ago.

There is apparently only 2000 of these being made, which is why there is only a 4 digit serial number.

That is at least my understanding
