Manny,
I found a reference to Edward B. Llewellyn as Principal Trumpet with the Minneapolis Symphony in an ITG Journal last night, so I thought I would update this list with what I currently know. This also puts the list in our current format. When you and Doug find the “official” list to confirm this information as well as fill in the blanks, please let me know.

ta,ta,ka,
Thanks. I have modified the Current 2003-2004 section to reflect what is shown in the programs instead of what is shown at the web site. This makes more sense now.

MrClean,
Thanks for the information. I can’t find the John DeWitt bio reference online, but his 1982 start date with the Houston Symphony lines up nicely with Steven Hendricksen’s start date with National. I found a reference to Adel Sanchez (included below), but no specific dates or reference to being principal in National Symphony. I will include him as Principal Trumpet starting after Lloyd Geisler’s retirement (he began with the ensemble in 1969, so this could make sense). If you have any references for me that I can provide a link to, that would be great.
Thanks for your help!

Jim Ranti preceded John Taber. Just saw Jim at the NY Brass Conference.

Wilmer,
Thanks for the information about Sam Krauss. I have updated our St. Louis list to include him along with the dates that you provided. I’m also making a guess that Joseph Gustat was the only trumpet player between Glickstein and Krauss although I don’t have any reference information to support this. The dates for Gustat are just a guess at this point.

Good information soon to come for the New York Philharmonic list! Attached is a response that I received from Richard Wandel at the New York Philharmonic Archives along with my original message. When I receive his letter I will update our list and move the NYP to its final folder. I’m excited that this request could be filled! Look for the complete list soon!

Dear Derek:
I will send you a complete list of our trumpet members from 1842 to the present via the postal service, if you will let me know where to send it.
Sincerely,

Richard,
Thank you very much for the detailed information! That cleans up the
middle portion of my list very nicely!
The list of Principal Trumpet Players with the New York Philharmonic
that I currently have looks like this:
1988-Current______Phil Smith
1978-1988_________Phil Smith (Co-Principal)
1973-1988_________John Ware (Co-Principal)
1977-1978_________Louis Ranger (Co-Principal)
1973-1977_________Gerard Schwarz (Co-Principal)
1942-1973_________William Vacchiano
1923-1942_________Harry Glantz (Became NYP in 1928)
1921-1923_________Gustav F. Heim
1911-1923_________Benjamin Klatzkin
1909-1911_________Christian H. Rodenkirchen
1908-1909_________???
1907-1908_________Jacob (Jake) Borodkin
1905-1907_________Christian H. Rodenkirchen
1899-1905_________???
1898-1898_________Edward N. Lafricain
1865-1899_________Friderick Dietz, Sr.
Ideally, I would like to show the names and dates of tenure for the principal trumpet players with the New York Philharmonic from the inception of the ensemble (1840s) until the merger in 1928 as well as the names and dates of tenure for the principal trumpet players with the New York Symphony from it's inception until the merger in 1928. This would essentially be two separate lists that would merge into one in 1928.
I have been reading many different articles from the International
Trumpet Guild (ITG) Journal to arrive at my current list. If this information is readily available from the New York Philharmonic Archives and you could send it to me to complete these lists that would be wonderful. If it is not available, or is extremely difficult to find, I certainly understand.
Are there any books on the history of the New York Philharmonic brass sections (with pictures) that you could recommend? I have just become interested in this topic of Historic Brass sections of major symphony orchestras, and any recommendations would be appreciated.
Thanks very much for your assistance!

I'm not certain whether Bill Williams played principal with the Rochester Philharmonic. Abe Lillard, former 2nd trumpet with the RPO, played a one-year as principal in 1992-93. During that time Bill was living in Syracuse, and may have been playing with the Syracuse Symphony. |

Athos,
Thanks for the input. The reference that I have for Bill Williams says, “He has performed as Principal Trumpet with orchestras including the Syracuse Symphony, the Rochester Philharmonic, the City of Barcelona (Spain) Symphony…” but doesn’t show any dates. Thanks for including Abe Lillard on the list with his dates of tenure. I have shown him as “Acting Principal”. Is this correct? I don’t have the ITG reference article handy, but I’m certain that George Coble from the Syracuse Symphony won an audition for the New York Philharmonic in the early 1990s. This would line up with Bill Williams being in Syracuse for the 1991-1992 season.
