I'm going to start studying this piece and I was wondering what tips anyone might have and whose recording of it is best? I already have the Marsalis recording, looking for another one for balance. |

The best (or at least the one I like the best) is Tony Plog. It's a tuff piece but (like anything)can be suprisingly easy if you let it be. Have fun and good luck. |

If you can find it, there is a great recording of Phip Smith playing it on one of his recitals. I used to have it on tape, but I would have to hunt for it. _________________ N.Y. Bach 31 bell S-bore (.440) 50XX, Bob Reeves 41sv-692s, Bach MV 1.5C/warburton 9 BB for legit.

I like the Thompson recording, and I'm absolutely certain that the Phil Smith would be nothing short of phenomenal. _________________ BM Oklahoma City University

Plog's recordnig is a little fast for my tastes. I've seen a few players who listened to this and tried to take it at that tempo...unsuccessfully. Does Ray Mase have a recording of this? |

My vote would have to be split between Hickman's and Wynton's recordings. I prefer Hickman's articulation style, but Wynton's overall playng. Tony Plog is far too much of a straight-tone guy for my taste.

I also like the recording with James Thompson, what a sound! George Vosburgh has also released a recording of it. Jason |

Yeah, James Thompson's recording is good. It was released through the International Trumpet Guild. If you are not a memeber of ITG (International Trumpet Guild), you shoudl become a member. Along with some great articles, you get FREE cd's and FREE music. It is a great organization. Now that I have put my ITG plug in:), Thmpson's recording does have a few intonation issues, but it is overall very musical. Hope this helps.

Only a few intonation issues? I must have a different CD than you do. |

Well, I didn't want to be too brutal. However, it is unfortunate that James had never heard of alternate fingerings and the such. |

I also was not too impressed with the James Thompson CD. Though from looking at the recording dates it looks like he maybe was a bit rushed on getting the recording done. That's from my memory, it's packed away for now but I wasn't at all impressed with the CD and was rather dissatisfied with it. The Hickman recording is so far the best recording I've personally heard of it but I haven't heard too many recordings of the piece. _________________ Beginning Trumpeters Yahoo Group

Thompson is an amazing player. That CD (as I believe) was made just after an ordeal with mouth cancer...unless my source is completely full of crap??
