Why do most choose to play on a picc with the A slide in for a part in 'D'?

Thanks.

I'd say that it is because pics play and sound better with the A slide and that a "D trumpet" part is in the key of F (easier).

The vast majority of D trumpet parts you come across are the baroque parts (Bach, Handel etc), meaning that the tessitura is quite high. Rather than risk the numerous split notes that this could entail on a D trumpet (due to the closeness of the harmonic series up there), players prefer the security offered by the piccolo.

As for why we use the A side, rather than the Bb - F major works better than E major on every piccolo I have played.

I agree with the above. All the piccs I have played are better on the A side.

Pieces in concert D, lie well on the A piccolo with respect to trills, etc.

The A picc, D Trumpet is what we refer to at IU as 'the power set up'

Gives a good clear 5th transposition, usually easy fingers, and the A picc sounds better... end of story.
