I am on my Schilke, can something be done to improve the performance of my beautiful Schilke, because I do love this horn so.

It's only a few years old, but I purchased it last year used and in beautiful condition.

Hmmmmm,
What model Schilke, what mp are you using? Some people respond better with less resistance and some need more back pressure as they get higher. There also could be issues with your Schilke, do others have the same perception with your two horns as you do? Mark

Don't blow harder, (just kidding too)!
Actually it doesn't seem that anything you are using would be causing problems. Have some friends play it and if they perceive it the same way maybe the Schilke could go to the doctor for a check up. It could be valve alignment, tubing not butted together squairly, barnicles in the tubing or a cork as mentioned above. Good luck, Mark

Hi Allen,

AS you must know, the Schilke S22 is a large bore horn and the blow is very different than the Olds Recording. I would recommend a much smaller backbore for your mouthpiece to gain a bit more resistance until you get the same feel of resistance as your Recording. The 3 series Warburton cups are also on the large side and you have to create more of the compression in your chops. You will also have to move more air to get the same feeling as the Recording. I've had both and sold the S42 as I couldn't keep up with it.

John Faddis and Roger Ingram, noted high note and lead players, use the medium bore S42, presumably for an easier upper register.

Hi,

Dave has hit it on the head. The Recording offers more resistence and, consequently, is easier to play higher. The compromise is of course that you don't get quite the fullness up high that you get with the larger bore Schilke on the same mouthpiece (as impressive as the Olds is).

Dialling some resistence into your set up for the Schilke (probably with a tighter backbore on the mouthpiece) should even the playing field. There is always a compromise however...in my experience in this case your sound will become slightly brighter and more focused.

If you want the Schilke to play as easily as the Olds on your current set up you need to practice more and get those chops working more efficiently. The reward is a fuller more controlled sound (not knocking the Olds). Depends what you want really.

Just my .02

Regards

Trevor

Thanks guys. I also have a Warburton 4M but is has always felt a bit small for me; I probably need to just put more time in on it. I'm also going to look around for a smaller BB to see if this helps. I may have to send my girl off to get a check up and valve alignment, I sure will miss her while she's gone.

It's surprising that my Olds Recording seems to blow just as open as my Schilke, I was even thinking that the Olds had a slightly larger bore also.

If your Recording was built during the golden age of Olds, when Zig Kanstul was there, that would explain it. Kanstul knows how to make horns that resonate. I have a Yammie 6300 series that is my main axe. Every once in awhile I haul out my '63 Olds Ambassador and it blows my Yammie away. The upper reg. is SO much easier. Seems like magic is in that horn. I'm thinking about sending the Olds off and having it refurbished and make it my main horn. Dump the Yammie and get an LA Olds. I hear they are even better than Fullerton horns.

I'll chime in; the backbore is the problem. Totally different horns require different mpcs. You've got two great horns there.

Usually I'll agree with the different mpc for different horns take. You know, balance between player, mpc and horn. However, I have played an array of mpcs on both of my horns (mentioned in earlier post) ranging from an 'a' Schilke backbore to a Monette, which probably is a much larger stock backbore than the norm and the result was the same. Ambassador was better, no matter what the mpc.
