I have 800 bucks to spend for a "new" horn.

Have looked at a few and thinking about a "low end" pro. IE:

New Getzen 700S for 775
New Zeus ZTR 750 for 750
Used Yamaha Allegro for 750 (Sounds a bit high and yes I know - this is not a pro level)
New Getzen 590 Capri for 545 (Intermediate, but I like the price)

I don't play professionally, am a comeback player and MAY join a community jazz band or orchestra, but that is about it. I currently play on a 1941 Reynolds Pro and an Ambassador. Went to the Music shop and played a few new horns (Yamaha, Schilke, Shmidt and Bach) and was really surperised at how differently they played versus my older horns. I will keep the Reynolds, but would like to have "New" horn to play as an alternative.

Any other recommendations?
Hang on to my money?
Anyone got a good one they want to sell?

I just bought a 1941 Reynolds from Ebay, haven't gotten it yet, how does yours play? In what way do the new horns play differently from the old ones?

I have a few suggestions for some good used horns. It all boils down to what type of music you are playing and the horn that feels and sounds good.

1. Yamaha 6310-Z.

2. Bach Strad

3. Olds Recording

Go with a Getzen. You could not go wrong with a Getzen.

In the past year I've purchased a mint condition 6310Z for $750 and an Olds Recording in very good condition for $633. Both are excellent pro horns also in your price range.

For $800 you can get a very good used pro horn. Check the TH Marketplace. I think there's a Burbank Benge for @ $800. Another very good buy.

>>In what way do the new horns play differently from the old ones?

This only my opinion and the best I know how to describe, but it is really hard to put into words "how" they play differently.
The older horns have a "darker" sound vs a more Brassy sound on the newer ones.
The newer horns seem tighter. My vintages seem to play "loose"
(Kind of like the difference between a computer printout of great work of art versus someone painting a reproduction.)
The newer horns seem to "vibrate" more than my vintage horns - don't know if that makes any sense.

>>I just bought a 1941 Reynolds from Ebay, haven't gotten it yet, how does yours play?

It plays great, but I do have it in for a valve job. The third valve was loose and Sticking (Wear) So I decided to go ahead and have all of them overhauled. I will see if this makes any difference. See the comments above for additional details on how the Reynolds Plays. New or old - one is not necessarily better than the other - just different.

Cheers

bitripper,
If you would like a brand new trumpet outfit, try a King 2055T Silver Flair. It is a good all-around trumpet that will work well in a community jazz band.

If you like a brighter, lighter horn, you can get a used LA Benge from ebay in very good condition for well under $800, which is an excellent instrument. You can also get an early 1970's Getzen Severinsen for around $400 or a Bach Strad for around $750. I think you would be better off with a used professional instrument over a new intermediate model. You can still get a used pro horn from a music store for $800 if you don't want to go the ebay route. Check out Dillon Music's web site at http://www.dillonmusic.com and look under trumpets>used Bb trumpets - they are a reliable store with an outstanding selection.

Do you have a teacher? Probably the bess advice I see repeated on this forum is admonishment to spend your money on a great teacher before you spend your money on a horn.
Eight hundred bucks'll get you just an alright horn, but it's more than enough to get a few weeks of lessons from a reputable teacher. If you spend half of it on lessons for a month or so, you'll be far better prepared to shop for a horn when the other half of that money comes around again.

I have seen Getzen 700's a lot cheaper than that. You might want to ck with Washington music.

FWIW that horn in the $700 class is a great Trumpet.

You might consider an Olds Recording. There are six on eBay right now. Chances are you could pick up one for much less than $800 and have money left for an ultracleaning and anything else it might need.

Recordings, as you'll see if you search them on TH, are terrific horns. I have a 1957 model that's one of the best trumpets I've ever played, and that includes a slew of horns, believe me.

Ditto on the Olds Recording, beautiful horns, but if you get if for $700-$800 you still may need to put $150-$200 into it to have it cleaned and checked.

You have lots of choices for $800

- Used Bach Strad with 37 bell - early Elkhart models are a good bet Serial #'s from 36,000 to 150,000
- LA or even Burbank Benge - preferably with a 3X bell (best all-around and most popular bell - eventhough a 5X or a 3X MLP are fine choices) Do not get a newer UMI Benge!!
- Olds Recording - excellent choice
- Olds Custom Clark Terry Model
- Olds Studio
- Olds Super
- Getzen Severinsen Eterna (not all used Getzens are great - they had some quality issues for a while but the Eternas are great)
- Selmer Radials or K Modifieds
- Holton Stratadynes - Great underrated horn.
- Yamaha 6335

Many nice choices.

Good Luck!

Mike

Mike-

I'm a little surprised you recommend against a Burbank Benge 2X. While I admit that I am sort of a one man fan club for the #2 bell, I don't think the flare is so fast as to make the horn overly specialized. After all, Benge intended it to be a symphony horn, but it was also popular with lead players.

While I would be thinking "used Bach Strad" in this price range, I certainly wouldn't turn my nose up if a 2X crossed my path.

Cheers,

Tom

Keep your eye out for one of the used Besson Meha trumpets made by Kanstul. I regularly see them around for about $550-$750. Most have been in very good condition. In my experience, they are exceptionally good values in pro horns - well underpriced. Best regards, Kyle

I agree a Besson Meha would be a good choice. Tom, I wouldn't turn my nose up at a 2X or 2X MLP. They are great horns but I little brighter then some of the other Benge Models due to the bell flare. I should also mention that a 4X wouldn't be bad either. It has a 5X bell with a little tighter leadpipe. A Claude Gordon Benge would be okay - though I don't care for it personally. The 6X is a .468 bore that always sounds tubby and unfocused to me.

I think you should go and play a bunch of new and used ones and see what strikes you as being good. Different horns have different personalities and seem to respond to you as an individual. Some of the horns I get along with, in this price range, are "70s era Severinsen Getzen (a little on the bright side), Getzen Renaissance (also a little on the bright side but brilliant) there's one of these for sale here, Getzen 700 (darker), LA Benge#4 (bouncy and light), LA Benge Claude Gordon (open and fun), Benge USA #4 (dark and heavy, a good orchestral horn). I liked the sound of these horns but find them too tight or stuffy Yamaha 6310Z, LA Benge #2, Bach 43/25, Bach 37H/25, Olds Ambassador. Take a mouthpiece, take a friend go play and listen and buy. UPDATE - I ended up buying the Getzen 700S Eterna II.

I have been through several vintage horns and deceided it was time to just go new. I played several and decided the Getzen played the best of the ones I tried within my price range(Bach Standard, Allegro, Schmidt).

An interesting note - I tried 3 diffent Getzens of the same model and all 3 played differently. Picked the one that "felt" best to me.

Ended up paying 775 for the Eterna II. Thought that was a fair price - searched the internet and new 700 S were running between 750 - 800. Local music shop matched the price (even though they originally wanted 995).
