I'm going to college next year and am going to need a case for my horns. I want a 2.5, I have a C trumpet, Bb, and Piccolo. The question is: Hard or soft? Case or Bag? I wanted a wolfpack until the previous topic and now I'm not so sure. I like my current protec double but their triples are huge! Should I look at Deluxe Gard Gigbags, Reunion Blues Bags, Wolfpack Cases, Bach cases? No supercases, this will be for a graduation present. Were talking c$250...

I use a Brass Bags triple. It holds a Bb, C, and piccolo quite comfortably. It'll actually hold three big horns(Bb's and C's). I also use a leather specialties double mouthpiece case. When I put the piccolo in the middle slot and put the mouthpiece case beside it I can put a mute in the same slot without fear of denting or scratching. You might be able to put two in if you sqeeze a little. I've also put a Bb cornet in without much squeezing. The music pocket holds a fair amount of music and books and will take a large black music folder if you leave it unzipped. The inside accessory pocket holds pencils, tuner, metronome, and three bottles of oil with plenty of room.
It's rather light and quite small, same size as a normal Bach or Yamaha single case. It's a soft case but takes minor bumps and jostles quite easily. The only damage I've had was when a friend dropped the case on it's end(least padding) from 3.5ft high and the dents weren't even that big. Mine has backpack straps, a shoulder strap, and a side handle. The only thing it's missing is an end handle(I've heard it called a subway strap).
I got mine for $260 CDN so that should be about $175 US(the exchange was worse then, lol). |

tpetplyr,
I have a BRAND NEW Glenn Cronkhite Super Triple Bag in gorgeous British Tan leather for sale. Have had it ONE week...never used it...still in the box that Glenn shipped it to me in two weeks ago! He's one of the original guys that made Reunion Blues bags when they were REAL quality bags made in San Francisco...not the cheap stuff that's imported from China or someplace now! This bag is big enough to hold 3 full sized flugelhorns so there will be NO problem fitting your horns in it plus a bunch of other things! If I don't sell it before hand I'll probably put it up on eBay within the next week or so. It cost me well over $300. Selling for $265 including shipping. Can't beat the price...AND...there's no 4-5 week wait!

You might want to check with the school and see if they have lockers available to put your horns in....if they do, then I would go for a soft bag, as it's lighter and more conducive to those cross-campus jaunts. I have a Reunion Blues 2.5 cordura bag, and never had any damage to my horns (this includes when a strap broke and sent the case end over end down a flight of steps....ouch!). Just my $.02.

Okay, I have a brass bags triple also. I'm still thinking about getting an even harder case. I like soft cases and all (which the triple is not really) but they won't protect very well when you are traveling. I've already had to bring my horns on a bus with me a few times this year to go play in far off lands . I'm glad that I didn't have a soft bag because they would've been damaged no prob. But even the brass bag doesn't protect my horns as much as I would like. I think I might switch over to a completely hard case for my horns. But first I need a mute bag. |

I have to 2nd what riffdawg said..
The reason he is getting a Marcus Bonna - Flight Quad case is because he has seen me abuse mine & it works Great.. When I was looking for a case I wanted something Rugged, Light, Flight-approved & Versatile..
It is so versatile I've carried everything from Bb/C/Flugel to the time I really wanted to test it & I carried 2 Bb’s/C/Eb/ & a Short bell Picc..( I know 5 horns was pushing it )
Joel & I both like that it is convertible. We are ordering extra pads so we can have more configurations.. _________________ Kevin M.

I prefer the triple bag approach. If you're in marching band and have to travel, you can always use a single case. _________________ --Matt--

I have a Reunion Blues triple. It work ok for a gig bag but it is tight with trumpet, cornet and picc. I would never use it for a travel bag unless I could hold it in my lap for the whole trip.
I know I did not answer your question on what to get but I do know what I would not use for travel.

Pro-Tec cases are great! Light-weight like a gigbag but sturdy like a hardcase, and affordable. Check them out! _________________ I find your lack of faith disturbing. |

I have a Wolfpak 2.5 that I use to carry my Bb, C and picc around all the time. This case has a small size but holds the horns securely and safely. I too will be going off to college this coming year and will be taking this case with me. This is a great case for the price. A good investment. _________________ Brad

I have a locker at the music building at my school. I leave everything in there. I have single cases for my Bb and C. I hardly use my C, so it is my slim size single Bb, and me carrying a bunch of mutes and crap under my arms.
Here is my suggestion. Something with a LOT of room. My slimline case is nice for carrying just my trumpet... but if I need a mute I am sort of out of luck unless i have a backpack. _________________ "All music is folk music. I ain't never heard no horse sing no song." - Louis Armstrong |
