Hey everybody,
I'm always on the lookout for great practice materials. I recently acquired a couple of great books that I think are worthy of recommending to those interested in expanding their jazz vocabulary.
Pat Harbison's book, "Technical Studies for the Modern Trumpet" is great and focuses on developing harmonic control issues among other things.
The second one is by John McNeil. This is a fantastic resource and between the two should give the average trumpet player a lifetime of challenges. One nice thing about the McNeil book is the CD in which he models selected exercises.

Thanks, Larry! I'm glad you like the book. I have a couple more books coming out soon. Keep an eye out for them.
I also have a book that i am really proud of called "20 Authentic Bebop Jazz Solos" that consists of etudes for trumpet that are designed to be played by intermediate to advanced players with some of the Aebersold Play-alongs.
If you like McNeil's book, then you really must check out his educational video on how to improvise. There are very few people who can at one time be both hilarious and enlightening. |

Yeah, you're right about Jim being a real card. I had the pleasure of being in a big band that backed him in a performance in St. Louis some years ago. He was a riot and a hell of a player.
