|
|
Mendez had several hobbies. They included:
carpentry
masonry (he build a stone wall around his backyard pool)
chess
card games
gardening (hybrid roses, fig trees, jalapeno peppers)
swimming (especially seeing how many laps he could do underwater)
math (he loved solving math problems and using his many slide rules)
His favorite hobby, however, was restoring Model A Ford cars. He would buy old junkers and spend years restoring them to showroom quality. Because he loved them so much, he never sold them. But, to make room for the next one, he would give a completed one to a close friend.
Mendez Trivia Question #6: What famous celebrity and neighbor did he give one of his restored cars to?
Good luck with this one!

All right, I'll hazard a guess.
He was very close friends with Roy Rogers and Dale Evans. Could it have been Roy?
Another name just popped into my head, someone with the initials R. S., but I'll stay with Roy Rogers. |

I have noe clue on this one...
But, he seemed to have several connections to "Ford":
* He played in the Ford Orchestra
* He played in the movie Cowboy with Glenn Ford
But his first job in Flint was at the Buick Factory, so he knew about other cars as well.

John Wayne.
Wayne was a neighbor and they became close friends. They used to have contests to see who could swim the most laps underwater in Mendez' backyard pool. I'm told that Mendez usually won, but this was told to me by his sons.....so, who knows? They laughed as they told me, so I'm not sure they were all that serious about it or not.
The Duke helped get the cameo for Mendez in the movie COWBOY, even though he wasn't in the film himself.
