Hi Fellow THers,
I am looking for a version of Autumn Leaves that I can get soloing ideas from or possibly transcribe the whole solo, could anyone recommend a version that inspired them and that is in the key of C maj/A Minor (melody starting on A on Bb trumpet) (although the key is less important.)
Thanks!,

You might look at Keith Jarrett's version..the one I think is live in Tokyo 1996. It might be interesting looking at his ideas on piano, and approach them on trumpet. Cannonball and Miles do a very slow version on CB's album , "Something Else."....not sure of the keys in either recording. |

Another possible source may be Howie Shear. When you call Reeves and get put on hold, you hear a great version of Autumn Leaves done by Howie and his orchestra. I don't know if it is available, but the guys at Reeves may know. |

how about any of Miles' versions? I seem to recall a few on the Complete Plugged Nickel that would be...interesting to transcribe... _________________ Scott

Chet Baker's version! If you want soloing ideas his version will help you tremendously! |

My two favorite versions are Miles on "Miles in Berlin" with Wayne, Herbie, Ron, and Tony and the Joe Henderson version on his CD "Four!" with Wynton Kelly, Paul Chambers, and Jimmy Cobb. |

Yeah, that's great and I really like the little extension he adds to the end of the form, but Chet plays it down a step from where most people play it (concert F minor instead of G minor). |

The Miles in Berlin is more accessible than Plugged Nickel and Miles is playing much better on that one. On Plugged Nickel the "kids" (Herbie, Tony, Ron, Wayne) are taking it MUCH farther out. The Berlin Autumn Leaves features perhaps my favorite Wayne solo of all time. |

I've always felt that Miles' chop/health problems on Plugged Nickel led to some of his most intense, creative playing...it's as if the technical limitations allowed him to go somewhere else and really drag out some hidden, deep dark stuff.
And yeah, I was kind of joking about transcribing it--most of his playing on those dates is almost untranscribable!
Agreed re: the Wayne solo on the Berlin version. _________________ Scott

yes, i listened to the Miles version on Plugged Nickel recordings and I won't be transcribing that - it is exciting though.
I discovered in my Clark Terry collection a really great version in concert F on the album Portraits - they have a nice intro goin on as well. Check it out.
cheers,

Thanks Jeff! I'll have to dig that record out - it's here somewhere.

I know the very best version of Autumn Leaves on the whole planet for
you. Sing scat style and record yourself, then transcribe! 'nuff said. Tom |
