Mendez received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1982, about one year after his death. In order for this to happen, numerous celebrities must nominate someone to the Hollywood Historic Trust.
Here is the verbatim letter (including any misspelled words, grammatical errors, etc.), copied exactly as it was written. These, and other letters of nomination, are displayed in the Rafael Mendez Library at Arizona State University.
July 7, 1982
Gentlemen:
Please allow me to add my voice to those who, like myself, have an unending respect and admiration for Rafael Mendez, the man and the artist.
The Hollywood Walk of Fame would be enriched by the addition of a star in honor of his memory.
His distinguished contributions to motion pictures, radio and recordings, are legendary. He was indeed a unique artist who was a source of inspiration to aspiring talents. A star in his name will continue to inspire, especially us all of spanish speaking origin who thirst for more examples of successful achievements by those leaving a name which we can identify.
Rafael Mendez left a legacy which merits to be recognized by the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
Respectfully,
Ricardo Montalban |
