Sometimes I have trouble with musical labels, so please don't flame me if the following stuff is not 'Salsa' enough for anyone....

Ray Vega always sounded good with Tito Puente. Go to his website to find out what records he's on. I don't know the address, Badboy? A little help? However, pretty much any Tito will be invaluable.

Michel Camilo is a wonderful pianist, and has a great latin big band album out called 'One More Once.' Jon Faddis, Ryan Kisor, Michael Mossman, Brian Lynch. Geez!

Arturo Sandoval. Particularly the 'Danzon' record and 'Hot House'. The soundtrack to the movie "Mambo Kings' is a good one too, has some nice Charlie Sepulveda stuff on there too.

Eddie Palmieri. Brian Lynch was/(is?) musical director, along with Conrad Herwig and a host of fabulous percussionists.

Paquito D'Rivera. I know, he's a reed sucker, but man that guy can play. He's also on that Michel Camilo album.

Most of this is pretty commercial (some more than others) latin stuff. I don't know how that compares with what you have in mind 'Salsa'-wise, but I would think that these would be a good jumping off point...

Have a blast!

I played in a Latin band for almost two years. What a blast! We played Salsa, but we were mainly a merenge band, playing salsas, cumbias, bachattas (sp?) and puntas (sp?) occasionally to round out our repertoire.

As for recordings, if you are looking for Salsa specifically, it's hard to go wrong with Marc Anthony's Salsa recordings. He’s red-hot in the Latin community and was huge way before we as Americans knew who he was. Some other great salsa recordings are the salsa recordings of Gloria Estefan and of course Arturo Sandoval.

Have fun! I know I did.

For Trumpet work I would suggest Jesus Alemany.

If you are just looking for salsa recording's in general. I would recommend for you to listen to the queen of salsa Celia Cruz

Or Willie Colon, and Cheo Feliciano
Willie uses the trombone allot but Cheo Feliciano uses everything. Trombone screaming trumpetes the whole deal.

RAY IS BEAUTIFUL...and he too will long remember TITO PUENTE. who to my way of thinking, must have been like the Art Blakey of Cuban. However Bobby Shews CD is soooo much fun and energy, this CD makes for great listening.

The AOL link is no working so this will getcha' to the Vegameister:

"Chocolaaaate' !!???) I am no spullin' geek either but that night at Tula's we were talking about Cuban-Latin trumpet players and one the trpt-heads at our table...mentioned a player he had heard that nailed the salsa picture to the wall. I never heard of him, but after hearing you mention Chocolata' IT RANG MY TRUMPET-BELL-BRAIN?

Check out that CD and update when you can with more info.
Thanks.
Don

I found a link:
to the Conga Kings and the stellar trumpeter

In terms of "Salsa", "Pair of Kings" pretty much nailed ALL the HEAVIES (Pair of Kings...WE GOTTA TALK MAN!!!)!! I would also suggest..

Michael Stuart (The arrangements are INCREDIBLE!)
Tony Vega
Gilberto Santa Rosa

Between this and King's list, you have EVERYTHING you wanted to know about Sala...but were afraid to ask!!! One word of note with Marc Anthony. Stick with the Latin titles. The American/English titles are "Pop" orientated and won't help you. Here's wishing you Good luck, Strong chops and welcome to the "Salsero" family!!!

I forgot to mention one other thing. I know in my experience, you will rarely find phrase markings in the music (sometimes not even volume indications!). When in doubt...Think legatto and connected when tougning. 8th and 16th notes are generally played evenly, as opposed to jazz phrasings. There are a few exceptions but few and far between!

I found my old Sandoval CD "The Latin Train" that I was given to me by him a long time ago at a clinic in Tacoma.
although Arturo calls the CD "LATIN" not salsa.

I love the little quip inside the jacket cover.
On this album Arturo Sandoval's 'THE LATIN TRAIN" trumpet virtuoso Arturo Sandoval restates the time-honored adage.......
"HOME IS WHERE THE HEART LIVES" as "HOME IS WHERE THE HAPPY HEART LIVES."
and in this case is located in Arturo's raices-deep affection and total reverence for his Cuban musical heitage first acknowledged on his sterling Grammy Award winning package DANZO'ON (DANCE ON.)
He pays so much tribute and honor and love and homage to a cuban trumpeter maestro Felix Chappotin.
My favorite cut to this CD is #4 called WAHEERA!!! WOW!!!
. I PLAY IT OVER AND OVER AND OVER...What feeling, what love, what emotion...soo lyrical and heartfelt.
Arturo has and wears many stripes and colors...and plays everything soo well.
He handed me another little single (without a jacket) that he had made up on his own nickle for the walt diz. production movie score:
COLORS OF THE WIND and I guess was inserted into the Latin Train CD at N/C by Walt Diz group... a while later when the Latin Train was released.
The Beautiful "COLORS OF THE WIND" and the inscipt on that one reads.
"THANK YOU, WALT DISNEY COMPANY, FOR WELCOMING ME TO AMERICA AND SUPPORTING MY CAREER.
THIS IS MY TRIBUTE TO YOUR "SPIRIT AND GENEROSITY"
signed -Arturo Sandoval.

Many cats...hammer the big guy with the big sound and genius... for what appears to be too MUCH IN YOUR FACE WITH A BIG EGO..BUT IT IS A MISS UNDERSTANDING!!! WHAT SHOWS IS HIS LOVE AND INTENSITY AND DEMANDS THAT CUBAN AND LATION MUSIC BE PLAYED WITH A MUCH CARE AND PREPERATION AND STUDY AND THAT ONE SHOULD ALWAYS DELIVER THE BEST PERFORMANCE THAT THEY CAN, AND DIRECTLY FROM THE HEART WITH LOVE, RESPECT AND REVERENCE...BUT ALWAYS FOR THE ENJOYMENT AND EXCITEMENT FOR THE NATURE OF THIS PURITY AND CLEANSING QUALITY THAT THIS STYLE OF MUSIC GIVES WITH SUCH BLESSING.

"WOW! I NEED A VACTION...from these airbrush fumes...))

Don - This Conga Kings CD was produced by Chesky. called jazz descargas. Phil Woods was a featured guest soloist as well as Chocolate and Jimmy Bosch. I'ts got Oye Como Va, A Night in Tunisia, Manteca, The Peanut Vendor, Caravan. I think it is the only CD I have with Chocolate -Very stylistic - you can hear the traditional approach in his playing. Like the Celia Cruz style. I am not an expert .......just really like the music
