What is "DFW Trumpeter" ??
Sorry...I'm not familiar with that....

Hi Robert, the DFW Trumpeteris an email list aimed at trumpeters in the Dallas/Ft Worth area. I try to, somewhat unsuccessfully, list gigs, recitals, group concerts along with horns for sale and other things of interest to trumpeters. It's an offshoot of the DFW TrumpetFest that started in 2003 and led to a need for a way to keep in contact with people that could enjoy getting together for those types of things.

Dave

Uh, 2ndchair, I believe that's "grammar"...

Kidding aside, your point is well taken. But this isn't merely an ebay problem, it's more pervasive as an internet problem. I can't tell you how many requests I get to buy my speakers advertised for sale on Audio Shopper via emails that I can only describe as written in "terrorist English".

I've learned, as I'm sure you have, to recognize the tell-tale words or phrases and just delete the email. I never respond to them.

The moderator of the site has issued "scam alerts", and these alerts are becoming more commonplace.

As for eBay, specifically, I see nothing wrong in requiring a first time bidder to contact the seller via email or telephone. A telephone conversation not only allows for the opportunity to "feel out" a person, it makes a potential scammer think twice about unwanted exposure.

I've never sold on ebay, only bought. Isn't it possible to require first time bidders to use the escrow service, which would protect both buyer and seller? I'm sure this is more of a nuisance and likely to mean a delay in payment and receiving the goods. I'm not an expert on this, so I stand to be corrected.

Thanks, Dave (dcstep). and Joshua...That's pretty cool. Sorry I didn't pick-up on the "DFW" appellation. I'm in the "Bos-Wash Corridor" (general area between Boston and Washington D.C.)...(did you know that one?). To my knowledge, there is nothing of that nature here. Sounds like a good idea, though.

Here we go again. I got this email today in regards to a flugelhorn I had in the marketplace. This is the only place I have the horn advertised at this time so ebay isn't the only place for a rascal to hang out.

Hello,
Thanks for yourv email,i received the payment information and all the necessary information and the payment will get to you when we finalise on some issue.the payment will be made with money order which will include the shipping fund to my sister in australia. You will just deduct your amount and help me send the excess to my shipping company in holland who will come your location for the pickup.the amount on the money order will be 2000$.
thanks.
john.

I had already sent "john" a shipping address and other contact info. If he has any ways to misuse this data he's in for a bitter let down as it's a work address and other data. No links to credit cards or other personal info. sorry trickster....

Here's my response:

I am unable to cooperate with such a request.

I only accept payment via Paypal or gold bullion.

I do appreciate your interest and will pass along your proposal to others who might be interested in your financial arrangements. If you like I can refer you to vendors in your home country who can facilitate your request. Do you want me to pass along your contact info such as your name address and phone #?
