Any one ever use this book? Any opinions on the book or the method? I've been doing some nosing around and have found that Maggio 'fathered' at least three of the methods on TH under Dedicated Forums. Any input from the heavyweights on the TH would be helpful. I'm thinking of purchasing the book and trying it out. |

I have it (and the T-shirt, which is good for a few comments and some laughs). I don't use it all that much, I must say. Doesn't mean many other's haven't found it a great book, it just didn't "jive" with me. FWIW, I have the feeling that some of Maggio's teachings were left out of this book. I also feel some of the students (e.g., Gordon, etc.) have written methods which expand and extend the original Maggio method. However, it's a good read, is pretty easy to follow if you've no teacher, and Carlton MacBethj is a very nice gentleman -- and a character with quite a sense of humour! I've heard he has had some health problems; I hope they are behind him now.
FWIW, every time mentions some book here or on TPIN that has helped them, about 90% of the time I have it, and it goes back to the top of the pile for a re-read. I think this one'll do the same... Hopefully somebody with "fresher" knowledge will respond.

I got the two books many years ago...farther back than I care to remember.
It was Carlton MacBeth, a student of Louis Maggio, that one day decided that he needed (felt obligated) to keep Maggio's knowledge from going to the grave with him. So he wrote the books.
I seem to remember that each of the books were written in daily lessons that span a period of 5 weeks or so.
Sincerely,

I love this book! I have never had a "teacher" other than the Method Books I have used and this is definitely my favorite range, endurance and tone builder. Maggio taught Claude Gordon.
I started using this book in highschool and added three notes to my range in a ten week period.
I rotate this book ... Clarke Technical Studies and Charles Colin Lip Flexibilities. |

It's a good book to have to gain knowledge from. That said, when it comes to using a book to practice and develop, Claude Gordon's "Systematic Approach" is a far more comprehensive and thorough book that expands far beyond the 10 routines in the Maggio book and combines Claude's many years of insight gained from studying with Herbert L. Clarke (as well of course as what he learned in the several years he studied with Louis Maggio), combined with his own successful playing career experience.
In addition, the Maggio book is worth the price just for the picture of the Chimpanzee! And now I read that there is/was a T-Shirt available? Tell me it's got the picture of the Chimp on it!!!
Sincerely,

Hey Roddy, we're both on line at the moment! In the instructions in the Maggio book I see nothing written about holding the Pedals out "as long as you have air and longer" as Claude instructed in his book (and Clarke and many other Clarke students including Earl Irons had their students do on various exercises). Do you know if Maggio had his students hold these last notes till the air was exhausted to build up the breathing (blowing) muscles?

The excellent trumpet books by Bill Knevitt are an upgrade and often considered superior to Claude Gordon books.
The systematic lesson plans are better in their design than Gordons.
Bill Knevitt is well known as a former Claude Gordon student. Claude Gordon himself made fabulous endorsements about Bill Knevitt such as.
"Of all of the trumpet teachers that I know Bill Knevitt is simply the best"
With that coming from Claude Gordon himself then checking him out would be a good idea if you are going to investigate the Gordon ideas.
I understand why Mr Gordon would be proud of him because he expanded and improved on the Gordons ideas and Bill never makes negative public comments about other people or methods. Bill is a good Christian man.
