Has anyone had any experience with these bags, and think they are worthwhile or effective?
They are advertised as being able to prevent tarnish simply by keeping the horn in the specially treated bag and putting it away in the case. |

I have had one of Roy Lawler's bags for about a month. I pull the bag over my sivler plated horn as it sits on a Hamilton stand when I am not using it. I'm too lazy to put it in a case. Since I have been using it, there has been no vsible tarnish. Under normal conditions I think this horn would have some tarnish on it by now. _________________ Dave Wisner

We sell horn bags at our shop (no, this isn't a sells plug, honest). Anyways, we sell our bags as "non-treated" mainly because it can be used on either a silver played or lacquered horn. We also slide the bags down over the top of our horns when they are on trumpets stands out in our display area. I truely believe that if you keep the surrounding "air" off the horn when it's not in use you can really deter tarnish.
My question is, "What is that chemical that everyone claims to treat their horn bags with?".
Seems funnie to me no one ever really says????? _________________ Lon A. Heim

|

As it turns out, I am having prototype anti-tarnish trumpet bags being made for my Bb, C, D/Eb and piccolo trumpets. They feature a contoured fit and velcro fasteners.
They are *not* gig-bags. Rather, one slips the trumpet in the bag and places it in one's case. Another use is to cover the trumpet for storage on a trumpet stand.
The bag is loosely shaped like this (top view, not to scale)
|\
| --------------\
| --------------/
|/
A flap wraps over the bell and fastens on the side of the bag. The trumpet slides into the bag lead pipe first. When the trumpet is on its stand, the bag slips over the trumpet and provides protection from the tarnishing effects of air.
Pricing not yet determined. Send a private message to me if you're interested.
The initial prototype will obviously be tailored to my Benges and Stomvi piccolo. My D/Eb is shaped like a small 'normal' trumpet, not like a Schilke 'high' trumpet. My piccolo is shaped like a Schilke P5-4 and not like a Benge or Selmer piccolo.
As such, customers having horns shaped like the Benge or Selmer piccolo or Schilke 'high' trumpets might have to wait until I locate a local player owning one with which to pattern a prototype.
Again, send a private message if you're interested. _________________ aka Benge Loyalist

I use tarnish bags on all of my horns and I almost never need to polish them. I got the tarnish cloth from the fabric store and made them myself; it's a lot cheaper than the pre-made bags. I also use the bags when the horn is on a stand or in a case. _________________ Allen - 'Chops-in-Hotlanta'

This may sound stupid.....BUT...Wouldn't a large towel or other type of "dry" non-abrasive cloth work just as well? |

Possibly, as long as it cost $30 or $40. _________________ Dave Wisner

It isn't stupid at all.
This is just the sort of thing I was thinking...you can spend your money for just about anything, and sometimes it is absolutely unnecessary. |
