I have an opportunity to acquire a MT Vernon Flugel. It is a very strange looking instrument. It looks like a trumpet (regular tuning slide, not leadpipe like most flugels) with a HUGE bell. Does anyone know the history of this horn? Also, I'm having a difficult time finding the correct mouthpiece, as it has a small (french?) receiver. Lastly, what's the horn really worth? I see it as more of a historical item as opposed to a modern flugel. Thanks in advance for any info.

Here is one that recently sold on Ebay.

This guy also has two consecutive serial # Large Bore Bb Mt. Vernon Trumpets. Anyhow, this particular flugelhorn apparently has a standard receiver as the mouthpieces that were included were a Bach 5CFL and a Marc. 5FLB . If yours really has that kind of taper, you'll just have to order a mouthpiece with that kind of shank. If you are serious about keeping the horn, I would order a couple from MouthipieceExpress and return the ones you don't want to keep. Do let us know how it plays ... looks very interesting.

Also, at one time or another I have seen a Mt. vernon Flugelhorn mouthpiece. They are rare though and I hope you don't have to go looking for one.

Joshua, thanks for the info. I had no idea this horn was work that much. I feel more comfortable spending more on it. I'm really curious what it will play like with the correct mp. The sound is beautiful, but the pitch is terrrible, especially on 2nd line G (35 cents sharp). I'll get a mp and see what it does. Thanks again.
