I'm wondering what people have to say about Blackburn trumpets. I know that the lead pipes are nice, but what about the horns! Give me the good and the bad!! (if any)

Thanks,
mja

Best Piccolo I have ever played.
Best soprano cornet I have ever played (the only one I have played that is tune!)

Beyond those I have played a few and been very impressed, but the two I have mentioned really stand out from the crowd.

In other words, very nice instruments.

I played a b flat and it was great. I have heard that the piccolo is also great.

Some of the best trumpets available. My piccolo is the best piccolo I have ever played...period.

The larger horns (B-flat/C) are very nice, although the ones I've played seemed a bit tubby for me...and I play a Chicago Monette, which already is a big horn. The owner of those is a pretty heavy player...if you know what I mean, so it might have just been his.

Good luck!

Louie

Played a Jericho Bb a while back. It wasn't quite the sound I was after, but it had the most even response from top to bottom of any horn that I have EVER played. Intonation was also stellar.

Incredible horns. Incredible people. On my wish list.

The kind of care in craftsmanship, personal service, and flat-out fantastic horns available only from folk like Tina and Cliff, and other small shops (Flip Oakes, Zig Kanstul, Andrew N/Schilke, etc.) with personal involvement.

I have a Bb and a C. Both are fantastic, warm honey drippers in gold. The Bb doesn't really cut in a big band section, but very nice for solo work. The C is my favorite of all, best I've ever played, I may sell my Monettes, but never the Blackburn in C!! Cliff is great, a very fine gentleman indeed. Can't go wrong there, but be ready to wait...

Hey Tom,

That's good to know about the big band setting, disappointing though. I figured I would just give one a try - I'm sure they have something that will work well in a big band setting!

Ciao,
Matt

I played the Eb at ITG. Hands down the best I've ever played. It blew the Schilke away, and that's saying alot.

I have a blackburn leadpipe and tuning slide on my C. That was the first experience I had with Blackburn equipment. Since I have played two different Bbs. One was an older model that played much like a Lawler, very very open and mellow with a dark sound. The other was a newer model that was gold plated and could be the most satisfying trumpet I have ever played. I played in sections next to both of these instruments (players, buds) and they are very easy to blend with. I played on a Blackburn Eb/ for about a year, I should have bought it . An excellent horn, very dark sound. Just my 2 cents.
Cheers,
Chad

Hi Gmac, Hope everything's going OK for you. I visited your website. I
can tell from all your posts that you are a thoroughly good guy. You will
definitely be a winner. You have an outstanding attitude... PM me!

Hi Leadguy, Cliff may have a horn he'd recommend to cut in a big band.
All those Schilkes are definitely world class cutters! Horns are becoming
more specialized, but there are still the usual great all-round horns. Feel
free to PM anytime too...

Hey Tom,

Great to see you back on the forum. I was wondering where you disappeared off to!

As far as Blackburn Trumpets go, I've only had the chance to play an Eflat owned by a local university. That horn felt and sounded like a B flat (big, rich sound) but had the response and intonation near on par with a Schilke E3L.

If you get the chance to try one out, I say jump all over it!

Yeah, I haven't had a chance to play his Eb yet, but everyone says
they're incredible. My Blackburn in C is absolutely amazing! Thanks
so much for the kind words and the welcome back. PM me anytime!

I had a friend who's dad bought him a blackburn B-flat for college and i got a chance to play on it. The only thing i have to say about these horns, is that it is very hard to be dissapointed by them, unless you like playing on crappy equipment.
