I went to the store for my new trumpet. I played a student model of a Jean Baptise that everone said sucks, then I played the Bach Big Apple and a selmar, dont remember which one though. I played best with the Jean Baptise. Does anyone have or had a similar experience like this?

It's certainly due to the bore size.
That parameter can bias the test a lot if you are not accustomed to it.

The Jean Batiste probably had slots for each note that were about the size of New Jersey, making it SEEM easier to play (since you didn't have to worry about being very accurate). This was my experience when I was working at Sam Ash and trying not to sell them. Usually, I'd have a kid play a duet with me on a Jean Baptiste, then on a Selmer or Yammie product (assuming the kid could play), and they'd hear the difference right away. Failing that, I would show them the Jean Baptiste's corroded and ugly valves.

HOWEVER

Sam Ash IS carrying a new Jean Baptiste that is made by B & S, and THIS is a VERY nice horn, especially for the money. It plays better than the Bach 37/25 on the wall in the Westminster store.

The Jean Baptistes are almost always manufactured with a .460" bore size. That's within a few thousandths of every other major manufacturer's "standard" bore size.

I had a Bundy that I bought at a pawn shop for $40 that played great (bought it to play in a clown band and beat that thing to death). I played several pro-line horns that did not come close to that horn. Every once in a while a student horn just "works", no ryhme or reason. That Bundy was a good one but I could probably play 25 more that played like a student horn. Don't put down a horn or buy a horn just because of the name on it. Play the rascal, it could be good or bad. old geezer Dave

EVERY Bundy I've played has played VERY well. Even compared to some Bachs, they always sound good and play evenly. I think the Bundy was just a really good design.
