I ride a motorcycle in the warm weather and was looking for a decent back pack horn bag that I could put one Bb and a couple of mutes in. It needs to give good protection since I play a Mt. Vernon and I don't want any thing to happen to it. old geezer Dave _________________ L.A. Benge 2ML 16389

The torpedo bag has great protection and you can get a mute bag to clip on. The whole apparatus should fit snugly on your back while you're riding. Just try not to wipe out, no guarantees then.

I would suggest the Protec Extreme over the Torpedo Tube for the following reasons:
1. Weight -- The Torpedo Bag weighs almost as much as a Bach hardcase when full. Do you really want seven pounds riding on your back when you're on a bike?
2. Accessory pouch -- The Protec Extreme has a built in accessory pouch that can expand to hold whatever you want. I can put in a straight, cup, and harmon mute without having to fully expand it. If I did that, I know I could fit in my Hamilton trumpet stand.
3. The Protec has comfortable padded backpack straps that can be stored inside a zippered compartment for when you want to use the shoulder strap.
4. Cost. I got my Protec from Dillon Music for about $30 less than the cheapest Torpedo Bag I could find, and I think the level of Protection is just as good. You'd have to go to something like a Walt Johnson to get better protection. _________________ --Matt--

I have a Protec Extreme and agree with all of the above. It is perfect for me but I don't ride a motorcycle. Great bag for the price. The torpedo does offer better protection though.

A year or so ago there was quite a thread running on one of the trumpet forums with respect to backpacking horns while riding a motorcycle. The conventional wisdom seemed to be "don't do it". Strap the bag to a rack or something... the last thing you need is to come off the bike and land on your horn. To say nothing of what could happen to the horn, think of your back! The roadrash will be insignificant compared to a spine injury. |
