In your experience, what's the strongest, lightest, most compact and most protective case that's large enough for a Bb, a flugel, and at least a harmon and cup mute?

I'm pleased with my Reunion Blues Super Triple. Room for 2 Bb trumpets and a flugel or one Bb, one flugel, and lots of other stuff. Good looks and good protection, too.

How do you tell the triple from the double? I ask because I, too, have a Reunion Blues bag. It holds a Bb or C and a flugel but there's scarcely any additional room.

It has a padded "evelope" that fits between the two horns that, I suppose, could hold a pic or a mute or two but it would be pretty tight. Also, when I fit two horns in the bag, I notice that the backbows are snug against the sides and I worry they are susceptible to damage. Hasn't happened yet but...

I think I figured out what I have and what I need. I checked one of the Websites that offers details on RB bags and the triple measures 20 x 10 x 10 on the inside, which is what I have. They also make a tpt/flugel bag with an interior that measures 21 x 11 x 9. The latter has a padded shelf for mutes. I'm guessing the extra inch would provide a little more protection for the backbows.

Hello,

Check out Wiseman Cases, out of the U.K. Their cases are compact, not too heavy, look great, and perform excellent. Plus, they are warrantied for life. They have several combinations to choose from, including trumpet, flugel, mutes. They are very pricey, but provide great protection.

Thanks, guys. Any idea how much a Wiseman tpt/flugel case weighs? The RB tpt/flugel is 7.3 pounds.

What about the RB Super triple? I have used (and still use) the normal triple and have noticed that it does put a good amount of stress on the horns (when used with tpt and flugel). But, I have seen the super triple and it appears to have a lot more room (you can put 3 full sized horns in it).

The super triple is 21.5x11.5x11 and weighs 9.4 pounds. Not sure I need that much space for a tpt/flugel and a couple of mutes. Besides, that's starting to push the airline carryon limits which, according to the Travel Insider Website is a "maximum of 45" in the form of a 22x14x9 bag."

The more I think about it, the tpt/flugel bag is just enough larger than triple I have to enable me to fit two horns and mutes in without forcing anything.

Music 123 has the tpt/flugel in leather for $239.99 with free shipping. They are backordered until March 5, however.

I have also heard good reports about the Marcus Bonna hard cases. I have ordered one but it has not arrived as yet so can't comment personally but it maybe be worth considering.

I, too, have heard good things about the Bona case, but I've never seen one nor known anyone who has. I wonder if they really exist or are, instead, the Unicorns of musical casedom.

Thanks, Brad. Not sure the MB is for me. The only time I need two horns is for a big band gig and I think the Reunion Blues tpt/flugel bag will be just the ticket for me.

I find the Reunion Blues Double in leather is a fine case. No problems ever and very high quality. Yes even the ones made overseas are as good as the ones made in San Fan.

Without a doubt, the most protective case you can buy fot this combo is the Walt Johnson flugel+trumpet+mutes case. The only potential downside is that the cases are specifically fit to a particular brand/model flugel... so if you change horns you might be unable to fit the new flugel. I have one of these cases that I had to quit using when I got the V1 flugel -- the case was fitted for a Yamaha flugel and the V1 is larger.
However, they CAN be refitted.

The Johnson is the only case I've seen that I would be comfortable checking as baggage. Absolutely the best in protection!
