If you have an instument with a bell which is 5 5/8" will you need larger mutes or will standard mutes fit????? Also if larger mutes are needed where do you get them from? I've never seen any adverstised.

You may need bigger corks, not bigger mutes. My Kanstul WB has a bigger bell flare (although not an unusually big final diameter), so mutes fit in too closely. You can buy cork from your repairman and fix them yourself.

Marcus Bona makes large and small mutes. The large are primarily for monettes, so, if your bell is that size they would fit. But also, you could just add larger corks.

1. What matters is the flare up to the bell. Most trumpets with larger bells do not need larger corks. The WT does, and a few others.

2. Most mutes need some cork adjustment, either by sanding down or building up, to play in tune in your horn for you. Most people seem not to do this...

I had to put larger corks on some of my mutes and an extra layer of tenon cork on my hamon for use in my Bach 65 bell and my Bach 238 bell. The standard size corks allowed the mute to "bottom" out with the mute itself touching the bell interior.

Most mutes need adjusting (snding/filing) to fit properly.
