Elongated yawn. Another way to think of it. Tongue down and out of the way for the inhale. Air drops right to the bottom of the lungs with no resistence. |

Thanks Dave -- knew you knew, just figured you could say it better'n I!
FWIW, my teacher (and thus I try) uses "tOH" for tongued attacks, to generate the same idea used by singers -- get to the vowel, the heart or meat of the note. The attack is important, but a very small part of the salami... _________________ Don Herman/Monument, CO

If air were to fall into your lungs, it would either have to be lighter than itself or it would have to somehow rapidly cool as it entered your oral cavity. |

It's an analogy, a helpful mnemonic... Like much of the Chicago School teaching concept, the idea is to present a simple to understand vision that will lead to the desired result without a lot of thinking. Jacobs was all about taking incredibly complex things and presenting a simple idea (or, concept) to a student to guide proper development. What matters is if the idea can catch hold and provide the desired result, not if it's 100% technically accurate.
Me, I get in trouble if I go too deep (drawing on some graduate acoustics classes and a bunch of engineering junk) or too shallow (present a simple idea that's not physically accurate) -- somebody always yells!
