I just read the Flight Cases thread. I'm doing a bunch of flying this summer and next week I think I'm going to have a problem. Recently I've been allowed to carry one bag on the plane. I've had to check everything else. So far, the one bag I've carried on has been my single trumpet bag. But next week I have to fly with four horns and I think they're going to ask me to check three of them (even though my pro-tech triple bag has fit in the overhead before, I think there are new restrictions on size). Who knows who to ask or beg for special exemptions? I do not want to check these horns, but what else can I do? I believe that I can keep the horns protected, but what about the problem of them being delayed or lost??? This is driving me nuts.

JC.

I fly all the time with two cases without a problem..The rule is usually 1 carry on and 1 personal item. I put my rcky. mntn. case over my shoulder and carry a bach double hard case and this seems to be fine. You can carry 5 horns this way. The few times they've given me flak I tell them it's a musical instrument(s) worth lots of $$ and I try to be nice about it. Being nice to airline people always seems to work better then being combative! Remember they deal mostly with obnoxious vacationing soccer parents with their 3 bratty kids and uptight buisness travelers. Hope this helps.

Run, don't walk to http://www.trumpetguy.com

If you get with Ken straight away, I bet he'll get you taken care of with his custome designed/made flight cases. Plus, he's hilarious in his tell-it-like-it-is way. No fluff there, just facts and a man that cares deeply.

I recently bought one of Ken's double cases and I am a very satisfied customer. I bought it intending to check horns under planes in it, but it's so nice that I'd rather keep it looking good on the outside! It's about as protective as a case could be.

I've worked for a major U.S. airline for nearly twenty-seven years. Take my advice and try at all costs to take your horns on board with you!

Personally the last time I tried to fly with my horns on board, the guy at the counter thought my mutes in my bell were rockets and the dude with the gun started pointing it at me

Dave-

It's quite heavy, especially with 2 trumpets inside. It could possibly fit in an overhead bin. However, it would be very difficult to carry through the airport as it is is so heavy and does not have either a shoulder strap or wheels, although Ken mentioned once that he can make one with wheels. I doubt it would fit the actual carry on guidelines as it is rather long. I'm sure it would not fit in one of those tester boxes they have at the airport.

I got mine here inside another suitcase so it wouldn't get all marked up. It is really nice to look at, and I've been using it here to go to work everyday.

I have a mildly-related mildly-funny story. About a year ago, I flew to Denver, and happened to have my RMCW mouthpiece bag with me with three Monette mouthpieces in it. It's funny how bullet-like those things can look inside a duffel bag being x-rayed. They made me get out all three of them and play them just so they could tell that they were real mouthpieces. They debated for about fifteen minutes until I agreed to just mail them home. So much for practicing.

A couple years ago on the way home to see my parents I had packed a metronome in my case...it switchs on pretty easy if bumped right and it switched on in the line for the security check point. I of course turned it off and showed the people next to me what it was...but there were a few seconds there that were kind of scary... you know at times like that, the strangest things go threw your head....Imagine standing in line at an airport and you hear tick,tick,tick...

The most recent International Musician has an interesting article on airlines, musicians, and their instruments.

I had a horrible problem with the carry-on...

Taking a trip to New york, I took my old horn and my old case (getzen) but I had my K and M trumpet stand too... Of course, they cracked my case open and checked out the stand because there is some metal in it.

The funny part, was when he put the horn in, he didnt latch the case and it all fell out...

luckily there was no damage and it was my OLD horn!

is there insurance for things like that?

Nick:

He's supposed to send us the case to look at next week. He decided to wait until a newer version was available. Stay tuned.
