Is there presently, or can there be constructed some form of alert that a member has an unread private message in the box? Something like the mailbox flag AOL uses? |

Hi Charly,
Thanks for reminding me to go slightly up above to the thin mustard yellow line and click on "Private Messages" tonight.
I had another one left there for me two days ago.
I go for weeks without remembering to check there, and its the only way to contact some folks who won't leave an e-mail address in their profile area.
I'll bet a lot of folks have never thought to click up there. They may have a few messages!
Hopefully the webmaster can upgrade that feature one day. Still, this is one heck of a fine site!
Warmest regards,
Tom Turner
PS: I've got several people to ship the new CD to, you included. I haven't forgotten . . . just very busy! Hope you'll enjoy it when it gets there. YOU my friend, will be a tough critic!
Gosh, I'd better go practice too! |

Tom,
When you start sending out those CDs don't forget me. If you recall I emailed you that I was working on a similar project and would love to hear your work. If you need any information or some $$$ for the disc, please contact me.
Thanks. |

Charly -- I've only received two private messages (I'd just as soon use email). Both times, a notice that I had a private message came up when I logged in to the forum. Given your history, I'm pretty sure your computer hates you. *
Tom -- Me too, please, pretty please?

Ok, so there is an alert mechanism already in place and I missed it. Do you know if the alert stays on until the message is read or is it a one time signal that will remove itself after that log in time period has been terminated? For example, in AOL the flag stays up until you read or save the message no matter how many times you come and go. Does anything like that happen here? |

Charly:
There's a message which appears up under the 'Forum Home Register Edit Profile' etc. at the top. It will remain there until the message is read. You do, however, have to be logged in for it to appear.
It would be possible to set up something more attention-getting. Let me know if you think that's necessary...

How about a hand that comes out of the desk top and wavs (ISE)
Yes, I think something more attention getting would help me. I just can't remember to look for the notice. (Sometimes I just can't remember. ) |

Update:
OK, this is done. You'll receive a little popup message if you have a private message on the system ...

OK. What's wrong with my computer now? I'm getting a lot of private messages and haven't seen anything that indicates that there is one. I've been going in and checking, and finding them, but haven't seen anything that alerted me to the message being there. |

Charly:
Try not using AOL, instead log on to AOL and use IE or Netscape instead.
The private message alert relies on Javascript to pop up a small alert window. It's possible that you have Javascript disabled in AOL, try to find the settings for scripting in preferences and make sure it's enabled.
TD
PS: whoops, sorry forgot to mention that you need to have cookies enabled too. I had to use a cookie or you'd see the popup on every page you load ... rather annoying. If it can't set the cookie, no popup, so maybe that's the issue.

I seldom log in on AOL anymore. It's usually on IE.
I'll check out the other suggestions. |
