The first of several substantive changes is now complete.

Email addresses are no longer directly available from a given user's post. Instead, the email function is handled by the forum system. This is to correct several issues.

1) The previous way of displaying email addresses made it all-too-easy for unscrupulous individuals to 'harvest' email addresses for spam.

2) Email messages can not be sent to someone from an invalid mail account. This is to prepare for other upcoming changes which will require an email address from a non-free email provider (meaning, hotmail and yahoo mail and their kin will be disallowed). Users will also not have the option of hiding their email. No more hiding anonymously behind a cryptic username, sorry, and only one user account per email account.

Please note that when sending email through the board, your username and email address will be included with the message which is sent.

This sounds like a great thing to me, Todd! I applaud you for the improvements you are making here and for the countless hours of work you put in so that we can all benefit from this forum.

Maybe. There may be some wiggle room for folks that have been around awhile, such as yourself. But, no guarantee yet, sorry.

Todd,

I have been on this forum for years. I don't make many posts and I don't feel like being all that public. I have been, I think, a respectful participant and I would hate to lose the privilege of posting because I don't want to use a paid e-mail account publicly.

Anonymity can be a valuable thing, and I don't think that it's a big deal. For instance:

  • There definitely are pro players of some stature that post on this site. In some cases, I think that these guys may want to remain anonymous.
  • My wife and I have free Internet access through a college she works for. We like to use this account for purposes related to her job.
  • Hotmail has excellent filters for handling junk mail.

While it is true that some jerks can create havoc anonymously, the moderators seem to have acted quickly to control the problems that have come up.

Perhaps I could have been clearer. You will not be required to provide your actual name, and your username will still appear on your posts. Howver, you will not have the option of disabling the appearance of your email with your posts, and this email address will be verified by the system. Of course, no-one will ever see your email address unless you reply to a note which someone has sent to you.

As to the use of free email accounts, educational accounts would not be prohibited, but free accounts such as those mentioned above may well be.

Don't forget that AOL accounts, which grant endless usernames and allow up to seven usernames per account to be active simultaneously, are easy to abuse.

Mike, To my knowledge you do not need an email to post on this forum.

I am hoping that an exception can be made, especially in cases where someone has been a member here for a while.

I would not be willing to have my main e-mail address used in any context associated with the Trumpet Herald. I used to be willing to, but after we recieved as VERY rude e-mail (loaded with shall we say, "trash") from someone in reference to the Trumpet Herald last year, which my wife had the pleasure of opening, I had to draw a line between my personal life and the Herald.

And believe me, as hard as it is for the Herald to attract professionals, it won't happen under the new circumstances. Wish it wasn't so, but I'm afraid it is.

Sincerely,

John Mohan

John and/or Todd,

It seems to me that there is a way to work around this. As an example, e-bay accepts hotmail, etc but only if you give them a second private e-mail address. This private address is kept confidential to my knowledge and it is of the private e-mail address that the administration uses for correspondance with you.

Liad
