Well it's not that bad, just play in a couple of good paying ensembles and live out the rest of my student loan _________________ Keep Playin'

Hey trumpetmike,
I definitely hear you about there being way too many teachers who are miserable with that lot in life and doing their students a disservice in each and every lesson - just clarifying that I'm don't consider myself in that category (check out my paragraph that began with "personally"). Sure, I do it for the money....but also because I get a degree of satisfaction out of it, and would do it regardless of what kind of gig I had.
Hope things are well across the pond!
Best,
Greg |

Given a choice between never playing again, or never teaching again, I would choose to give up my personal playing. I'm one teacher who is older, and sometimes I get tired. Then I meet a young person who makes me excited all over again. Then I get in front of my class I find out there is a lot to get excited about becase there are lots of young folks who love music.
I love to play, and those of you who know me personally know I'm a darn good player. If I lived in a major city I could play for a living, but not in the city where I live. We have no full-time players here simply because there is not enough work. If I lived in a place where I could make a choice between my playing and my teaching I would choose to spend time with the kids! The cool thing for me is that living here I get to teach and live ina very cool city at the same time!
One last comment, I enjoy teaching the kids who are not good players as much as I enjoy teaching my young stars. I just enjoy being around the kids and I could be teaching band, but I would also enjoy teaching religion, or social studies, or what ever -- I just teach music because I'm good at it! _________________ C - Harrelson 750 Modified Bach Strad
