I am selling a horn in the marketplace and received several e-mails from this guy Chris Mauldin. Have anyone else had any dealings with him? He wants to buy my horn and have a 3rd party to send me check for $3000 - cash the check and pay for shipping and then send the rest back to him. Is it just me or is there something quite stinky going on? old geezer Dave

Did he say that the third party was going to send you a check or money order? It’s probably going to be fake, and you’ll ultimately be responsible for paying back the bank for the cashed check amount. By the time the bank notifies you, you would have sent the guy the “change due”, so you’re going to be down that amount for sure, while he walks away with your money.

It's a well-known con and depressingly becoming more common.

Somehow they get something which seems convincing - a bankers draft or a cashiers cheque or something - and it seems to have gone through your bank OK, even when you checked with them. You ship the trumpet and some time after that your bank contacts you to say sorry, it was fake. You have no trumpet, plus you sent him the change from the cheque. Ouch!

I would just ignore him completely.

Dave, get out the deodorant! This sure is a "stinky" deal. It's one of the original eBay scams. You cash "Chris Mauldin's" check and send him your horn and his "change". A week or so later you hear from your bank that the check was fraudulent (even if it's a Certified check). Guess who's on the hook for the funds (and guess who just paid "Chris Mauldin" to take his horn)....

FWIW, YMMV, AATJ

My brother had an encounter very similar to that-but a different name. This guy,White Cole, wanted send my brother $3000 in cash, give him$300 for the clarinet and another $200 for his running around. He then wanted my brother to wire it to his friend where the guys friend would pay for other shipments for White Cole. Yeah-it's confusing. Kinda creepy too. Chris
