Dizzy Gillespie died from Pancreatic Cancer on January 6th 1993. He was diagnosed with it in the late 1980's and still managed to perform and tour until he retired in 1992. By the time he retired the cancer had done its damage, and unfortunately took his life.

Hope that helped.

Since this is a Dizzy Gillespie thread, here is something that I've wondered about for a long time. When and why did Dizzy started playing a trumpet with an upturned bell?

I am not a 100% sure of this answer, but I do believe that he was playing a show, don't know the date (40's?-maybe 50's?), and someone on stage fell onto his horn bending the bell up. He was able to continue to play the show with that horn, and actually felt that he could hear the notes better. The rest is history, as we all know, because Dizzy is famous for playing with that up-turned bell. Of course after that first night, the bell up-turn was a custom job, fully intended by Dizzy.

I think that is pretty acurate, but if you have time just search the net. There are some good Dizzy tribute sites out there that give good information.

Tim back in Civil War times there was cornet design known as a "helix" ..........it had a semi-circular shape, three top fingered rotary valves, and a bell that pointed skyward at an angle of appx 30 degrees or so........... ain't nuttin' new under the sun

Another legend has someone at a party falling or sitting on Dizzy's horn, bending the bell, and leading him to try it that way and like it. I've always been leary of this theory because, if you think about it, a badly bent bell would probably be crimped to the extent that it would sound terrible, if at all.

It's true, of course, that at some point he decided he liked the upturned bell and had a number of them made. One is now in the Smithsonian Museum of American History in Washingon, D.C.
