I was given a Maynard book with his best arrangements.
Can anybody play the Conquistador part where it hits the three D's and then goes down, builds back up and nails an A?
What a challenge. Even playing the solo part twice is a challenge.
Maynard is a beast.
I figured I could talk about this and not get flamed since this is the high range development group.
Need a test to see if your chops are worthy? Just play sixteen measures without stopping. Right?

It's an old book and it's out at the airport in my hangar. The only place I can play loudly at without the trumpet police bothering me.
I'll get back to go later. I'm headed there now.
IIRC it has
Maria
The Fly
Conquistador
Mister Mellow
Paccili.... sp?
La Fiesta
Chameleon
It's probably Fischer or Hal David

Very cool, Mark!
Out of print, huh? Where is your hanger? He He.
I am in Southern Cal too. Maybe we can get together and go through that book some time.

Can I play Conquistador?
The only way to know for sure is to lay out the chart and do it.
You'd better scan the pages and email them to me right away!
You might as well e-mail all the rest of the tunes too!
Stay cool!

The book is called "The Jazz Styles Of Maynard Ferguson." Was in print in the early 80's. I have a signed copy. Interesting book. Has all of MF's solos and a piano backup that has a little bit of a sketch score so you can see how some of the background parts are on the albums. But if you want to try to play any of the backgrounds you need to take it up a step and add 2 sharps. |

The Jazz styles of Maynard Ferguson
1978 Warner bros publications.
I could fax you several pages but not the whole 74 pages. Just private message me a fax. Anybody want a song or two? I fax in the evenings only.
Or could fly into Aqua Dulce sometime and have a dual in the sun.

I bought a copy of that book back in 1982 when I was a freshman in college. What fun music to (try to) play. I haven't played with it for years though, thanks for bringing it up here on the forum. I'll have to dust it off. Maynard has amazing stuff. _________________ Bb Kanstul Signature 1500A

Maynard solo transcriptions and a playalong CD of his BBN band are available from http://www.sheetmusicplus.com for $17.95. Bunch of tunes including Cherokee and a medley with McArthur, etc.

I own a copy of “Music Minus Maynard.” In fact I was on a waiting list for this book. I can play the “Medley” which includes excerpts from Chameleon, MacArthur Park, Frame For The Blues, and Maria. It also has the lead trumpet cues, and I play along with them, too. It is fun and I can practice my high range at the same time.
Does anyone know where you can purchase a copy of the album with Maynard on it? I have heard that it is a difficult one to find. _________________ Janell Carter

It is "Big Bop Neauveau" (spell checker anyone?).
This CD is out-of-print.
You can occasionally find it on ebay.
It will cost you more than a new cd, but if you wan't it, you will just have to pay the price!
at least some (and maybe all) of this one is recorded live. anyone know more?
This CD does not rank high on my list, but it is nice to have it along with the "Music Minus Maynard."
