Being a neophyte (no that isn't my religion) I stumbled upon a Mel Lewis Jazz Orchestra CD. "Live at the Village Vanguard Vol. 2". It's good stuff. What's your favorite recording by Mel Lewis? _________________ All murderers are punished unless they kill in large numbers and to the sound of trumpets.

I like All of them!! Thad Jones was such a great arranger/writer, not to mention Bob Brookmeyer and others. You can't go wrong.

Faddis tells a great Mraz story. Bob Brookmeyer is talking through one of his charts that has a road map from hell in it (repeats, D.S., codas, D.C., pencil in more repeats), takes forever to go through. Crash, bang, it all falls appart. As the dust settles and all is embarasingly quiet George says in his thick accent..."Piece the cake!"
Band went on break, as no one could play for a while....

Pepper Adams-Bari
Richard Williams-Trumpet
Danny Stiles-Trumpet
Bill Berry-Trumpet

Tom McIntosh-Trombone
Cliff Heather-Bass Trombone
Charts by Thad (Once Around, Three And One, Mean What You Say, Don't Ever Leave Me), Bob Brookmeyer (ABC Blues, Willow Weep For Me), and Tom McIntosh (Balanced Scales=Justice).
Solos! Joe Farrell, Pepper Adams, Hank Jones, Bill Berry, Bob Brookmeyer, Eddie Daniels (his first recorded album!), Jerry Dodgian, Thad of course...Lot's of composing while soloing!
Sounds like Richard Williams and Danny Stiles split Lead on this. Wonderful playing. Brookmeyer playing Lead on valve bone. The great sound of Cliff Heather on Bass Bone!! Was there ever a better Lead Alto than Jerome Richardson? Richard Davis and Mel Lewis become one. Dig the ride cymbal play inside the big quarter notes of Richard Davis. Swing you into bad health!
