I just can't stop listening to our Seattles Jay Thomas as he performed a wonderfully heart-felt soulful rendition of THE MAIDS OF CADIZ by L.Delibes and this arrangement was written by Gil Evans for orchestra and trumpet back in 1960.
Jay starts out with that first note...with a warm dense full centered note, he then adds a growl (I suspect a vocal chord induced one) and then brings it back to full depth. Truly a wonderfully controled piece of music that is beautifully placed by the Seattle Rep Jazz orchestra.
This is a very tasty version worth the price of the entire CD.
If you like to pick up the tempo..what better than another rendition of CONCERTO FOR COOTIE again featuring Jam Thomas and backed by a power house trumpet section of other local gifted players.
Floyd Standifer (ICON)
Dennis Haldane
Brad Smith
Alan Keith
and waaaaaay not least...Thomas Marriott
(the 1999 Caruso award winner)
WOW! WHAT A CD!!!
go to the http://www.srjo.org/ website and check it out.

Don't be confused...You see Jay holding a very strange looking trumpet? Can you believe that both he and Floyd Standifer as both world class trumpet players...also play sax??? (Floyd feels this is a great way to "rest the chops" as well as opens his creativity to all kinds of other musical ventures here in Seattle.
I talked with Floyd at the Bobby Shew ATM and gang....Floyd still plays amazingly well. I love his flug work. Talk about style...Jay and Floyd are BAD BAD BADto the goooooood.

I wanted to 2nd what was said about Floyd Standifer still playing outrageous trumpet. I've been pretty fortunate to have Floyd as a mentor. He is a great player with lots to offer younger players. He's a CD out that is a must listen to (it's called 'how to keep the music playing') pick it up the next time you are at Bud's Records.

and all that jazz.
The first time I can remember talking with Floyd was at an event at the Cornish School of the Arts many years ago, when I was introduce to him by Jim Knapp.
Seattle has such a history of world class jazz trumpeters and yes, FLOYD IS THE LEADER OF THE PACK!!!
