I just picked up MCFB about a week ago and I have some questions. Is it proper to breathe out the nose on the rests and then inhale? If so, should this be two counts out/ two in or something different? At the start of the rests, I feel my tongue change position as I exhale..I assume this is not correct so is there any way that I can stop this from happening? Also, the tension in the embouchure should stay exactly the same during the rests, is this correct? Thank you. I am looking forward to good results from the Caruso method. I feel it is going to help me a lot.

Matt,
"Is it proper to breathe out the nose on the rests and then inhale? If so, should this be two counts out/ two in or something different?"
During the rests you have four beats to breathe through your nose to prepare for the next series of notes. Do it anyway you want to as long as you try to keep everything else from moving or changing.
"At the start of the rests, I feel my tongue change position as I exhale..I assume this is not correct so is there any way that I can stop this from happening?"
The idea is to keep everything, including the tongue, from moving. If it moves anyway try to allow it to move the least amount possible. If you have no control whatsoever over the movement of the tongue during the rests don't worry about it for now. Just proceed with the instructions the best that you can.
"Also, the tension in the embouchure should stay exactly the same during the rests, is this correct?"
Yes, this is correct. Try to hold everything still during the rests while you breathe. Doing the Caruso exercises the way they are prescribed in MCFB will make you a different player in six months (if not sooner). How far you go is up to you! |
