Summit DID licence them from Universal (MCA) about ten years ago. However, they placed a cap on the number of years they could be issued.

The huge companies hang on to things and reissue if there is some sort of public attention to the artist in the news. Summit, or perhaps another label, could likely license them again in a few years. The initial process took almost three years before they agreed to the license. I think a lot of it has to do with priorities of their attorneys' time.

Summit got lucky. Turns out that the Mendez sons were close personal friends with the CEO of Universal. As a personal favor, the CEO made the licensing happen almost overnight. Funny how knowing people in the right places can cut through a lot of red tape!

I don't think that MCA thought that there would be much money in it for them because the market for these recordings was pretty much depleated shortly after Mendez died in 1981. We, as trumpet players can see the beauty of having these recordings reissued on CD, but in comparison to many current pop artists on the various labels owned by MCA, the Mendez stuff was insignificent.

If these 12 CD are no longer available, and they don't want to renew the licence, they don't want to win money. If somebody has these recordings, why don't make mp3 and upload somewhere?
Like that we can hear these famous recording .
Is it possible or is it a bad idea?

Mendez's family doesn't win money with rights because products are not available.
If you copy these recordings M's family doesn't win money too, but it is good for the Rafael's memory. Maybe they win this ?

If you don't copy, we lose the possibility to hear this famous recordings.
It's a pity!
