for some odd reason, if i try and warm up with the whole trumpet, I don't always get in the correct position. If I warm up on a mouthpiece, I always get in the correct position. Does anyone else find this to be the case?

Mouthpiece buzzing is a fairly common way to begin warmups because, as you said, they help get a good buzz going.
Regardless, if something works for you, you should do it! It doesn't really matter if it works for anybody else. Although, it is also good to ask questions
