What are people's thoughts on solo recordings by famous Orchestral players, such as Phil Smith, Bob Sullivan, Paul Merkelo, George Vosburgh and Charles Schleuter? |

The most recent recordings I have added of solo trpt are the new schlueter and the new George V. I usually like to set my cd player so that I have the schlueter Honneger INtrada come on First followed by the George V version and man talk about apples and oranges! WOW! Check these two discs out fellas for some contrasting styles of two trumpet players both of whom hold prominent orchestral positions. Words can not explain the Schlueter Intrada. These two discs must be heard. LAter! |

I have 3 of Smith's solo albums, 2 of Schlueter's and the new Vosburg album. I think Smith is a great lyricist and sounds the best playing the cornet in the traditional trumpet/band repertoire. Schlueter is known for his very large, powerful dark tone, but ironically I tend to think that his solo playing shines most brilliantly in his soft, delicate playing on his solo CDs. Having heard him play a couple of live recitals which included the Tartini and the Hummel in E natural, I can say that he is a wonderful soloist on the piccolo and higher trumpets as well. My Vosburgh recording is for sale if anyone wants it.
